Friday, August 9 - Stop DAPL / Defund Hate / Neighborhoods for Affordable Housing

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: DEADLINE TODAY - Demand a Hearing on the Proposed DAPL Expansion

Energy Transfer Partners is now planning to double the amount of oil that the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) carries, to over a million barrels a day. And they’re doing this — once more — without the informed consent of native peoples.

Leaders from Standing Rock, Cheyenne River, Pine Ridge, and Rosebud have partnered with the Lakota People’s Law Project to demand a public hearing.

The fossil fuel industry tells us that increasing the oil flow through pipelines isn’t dangerous, but U.S. regulators say they aren’t so sure about that. The United States suffers hundreds of liquid pipeline incidents every year. DAPL itself has already leaked 11 times!

We simply can’t trust the oil companies, and you could make a huge difference in holding them to proper account. Please stand together again with Standing Rock—and officials from several Lakota nations—and join our call for a public hearing before the Aug. 9 deadline!

Action 2: Tell Congress to Defund Hate

This week, ICE ripped 680 immigrants away from their families in Mississippi.

680 people working jobs many don't want for pay many wouldn't take. Paying taxes. Trying to make a life. 680 people who as of last week no longer have a right to an attorney. No longer will see a judge. ICE/CBP are judge, jury, and deporter.

Some may be legal residents. Some may be citizens. Just unlucky they didn't have papers required of brown people. Some have children, whose parents just didn't come home. Some have lived here for years. Maybe even decades.

These aren't the violent criminals they said they were prioritizing. These are just men and women with hard jobs at processing plants, working for a better life. We need Congress to defund the agencies that are tearing apart families.

The appropriations process is our best chance to act to stop Trump’s deportation machine. If you care about ending Trump’s racist immigration policies—like separating, caging, and tear gassing families—make a call today and tell your Member of Congress (MoC) to cut funding for ICE and CBP, and get rid of the slush fund that will allow ICE to continue terrorizing immigrant communities. Click here to learn more.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I'm calling to ask [MoC] to Defund Hate in this year's budget by cutting funding for ICE and CBP in the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill, and by getting rid of the slush fund in that bill that will allow ICE to continue terrorizing immigrant communities. Will you commit to work to Defund Hate?
