Action 1: Tell Your Rep to Support HR 3222

The Trump administration recently finalized a Department of Homeland Security rule change that restricts legal immigration by penalizing immigrants for accessing public services. The rule broadens DHS criteria for deciding whether applicants for visas and green cards are potential “public charges,”, i.e. people who are likely to depend economically on government services. Under the new rule, DHS will be more likely to deny U.S. admission and permanent residency status to immigrants who use federal benefits like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) and Medicaid. The rule forces millions of immigrants, many of whom have U.S.-born children, to decline needed public services to avoid risking their legal status. Unsurprisingly, the rule change is a pet project of the notorious white supremacist Stephen Miller, who has long sought to reduce legal immigration into the U.S.

Rep. Judy Chu has introduced a bill, H.R. 3222, to stop the public charge rule change by blocking the use of federal funds for its implementation. The bill, which is supported by leading immigration advocacy groups, is an essential piece of legislation to protect immigrants’ access to healthcare, food, housing, and other critical services. Urge your representatives to support this bill.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I'm calling to urge {Rep. PERSON} to support H.R. 3222, the No Federal Funds for Public Charge Act of 2019. This bill will protect the rights of immigrants and the children of immigrants to receive necessary public services, as the law currently allows. Thank you for your time and attention.

Action 2: TONIGHT - Immigration Organizing Call

Immigration should be a safe and empowering choice. Everyone should have the freedom to move and freedom to stay based on what is best for them to thrive.

The Trump administration has continued to escalate brutal attacks that intentionally hurt immigrant communities. Trump's deportation forces—ICE and CBP—defy court orders, ignore spending limits from Congress, and continue to prioritize terrorizing immigrants.

But we have the power to rein in these agencies—including by demanding Congress take action.

Join tonight’s call to hear from leaders at MoveOn, United We Dream, and National Immigrant Justice Center. Find out how you can take action to tell Congress to #ClosetheCamps, hold ICE and CBP accountable in the upcoming federal budget, and #DefundHate.
