Thursday, August 15 - Defund Hate / Rigged screening / No Guns at Walmart

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Sign Up to Defund Hate in September

Days after a domestic terrorist attack against immigrants, ICE ripped 680 immigrants away from their families in Mississippi.

680 people working jobs many don't want for pay many wouldn't take. Paying taxes. Trying to make a life. 680 people who as of last week no longer have a right to an attorney. No longer will see a judge. ICE/CBP are judge, jury, and deporter.

Some may be legal residents. Some may be citizens. Just unlucky they didn't have papers required of brown people. Some have children, whose parents just didn't come home. Some have lived here for years. Maybe even decades.

These aren't the violent criminals they said they were prioritizing. These are just men and women with hard jobs at processing plants, working for a better life. We need Congress to defund the agencies that are tearing apart families.

If you care about ending Trump’s racist immigration policies—like separating, caging, and tear gassing families—join Indivisible’s September Week of Action. Click here to learn more.

Text Defund Hate to 977-79. Indivisible National will reply with the latest updates on our plan for the Week of Action, and let you know when events are registered near you.

Action 2: Come to a Screening of the film Rigged: The Voter Suppression Playbook

The film Rigged chronicles how our right to vote is being undercut by a decade of dirty tricks.

Narrated by Jeffrey Wright, Rigged chronicles how our right to vote is being undercut by a decade of dirty tricks - including the partisan use of gerrymandering and voter purges, and the gutting of the Voting Rights Act by the Supreme Court. The film captures real-time voter purges in North Carolina and voter intimidation in Texas.

Action 3: Tell Walmart to Stop Selling Guns

On August 3 a mass shooter echoing Trump’s language targeted Latinx people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. 22 people were killed and another 24 were injured.

Walmart is the largest retailer of guns in the world. If it refuses to sell guns until our standard of gun ownership changes, countless lives would be saved and it would fundamentally change the conversation about gun violence in the United States. Please join us calling on Walmart to use their power to keep communities safe, until the federal government catches up to the will of the people. Call on Walmart to take these actions immediately:

  • Stop selling firearms until we raise the national standard for gun ownership and production

  • No longer make political contributions to lawmakers who get their money from the NRA

  • Use their political influence to advocate for legislative changes to raise the standard of gun production and ownership, including a ban on military-style weapons

  • Invest in the communities they serve and fund gun buybacks in key areas around the country

Walmart has acted before. After past mass shootings, Walmart responded by raising the age of gun sales at their stores to 21 and refusing to sell assault weapons. It’s time for them to take another step.
