Action 1: Tell Durbin to Support Detainee Rights Bill

Yesterday, H.B. 3239 passed in the House. The bill addresses the horrific conditions at the border by improving nutrition and water hygiene standards. We believe in a world where no one is imprisoned for seeking a better future. We desperately want that to happen right now and until it does we need to whatever we can for the tens of thousands of migrants in detention today.

This now moves to the Senate. We need this legislation to pass so that CBP is forced to treat humans in their custody with dignity. Too many people have died and suffered under the cruel hands of CBP. It also ensures facilities aren't overcrowded, and that people receive bedding and have health screenings by trained medical professionals.

Senator Durbin on the Senate Judiciary Committee can now speak up for this bill and ask the Committee to push the Senate version forward.

  • Senator Durbin | DC: 202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I'm calling to ask Senator Durbin to push S.2135 forward in the Judiciary Committee. This bill, which protects the rights and health of detained migrants in CBP custody, has just passed the House. Can I count on Durbin to support this bill in the Senate and push for a hearing in his committee? Thank you.

Action 2: Phone Banking and Letter Writing on Monday

Join Indivisible Evanston's Wisconsin "Reach Up" Program on Monday, July 29. All predictive lists concur that Wisconsin, with just 10 electoral votes, could easily be the state that determines the 2020 presidential winner.

Phone banking: Call “friendlies” – people who have volunteered with Democrats in the past. We’ll be inviting them to a volunteer party in their home WI county, where they will hear from local leaders and get them re-engaged. Bring laptop, earphones, phone, and chargers.

Letter writing: Write letters to get likely Democratic voters to register to vote. Bring a book of first-class stamps if you can. Any donation is appreciated.

When: Monday, July 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: 319 Wesley, Evanston
RSVP and share on Facebook

Action 3: Phone Banking and Debate Watch Parties 7/30-31

Is it a phone bank? A debate watch? A party? Yes! In fact it’s the Wisconsin Phone Bank Debate Watch Party on Tuesday, July 30 and Wednesday, July 31.

Blue Beginning and Indivisible Chicago are working with the Democratic Party of Wisconsin to contact people who have volunteered for them in the past. We’ll be inviting these folks to attend parties in their home counties, where WisDems will reconnect with them and preview their plans for 2020. As you know, Wisconsin is probably the most important state on the electoral map. This is the first of many projects we’ll be undertaking to help our neighbors win there.
