Action 1: Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects people from discrimination based on race, skin color, sex, religion, and national origin. However, the Act's crucial anti-discrimination provisions do not protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Thus, in the 30 states without robust LGBTQ anti-discrimination laws, LGBTQ people can legally be fired, harassed at work, barred from businesses, denied housing, and more because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

Democrats in the House and Senate introduced H.R. 5, the Equality Act to remedy this issue. The bill would provide necessary national-level protections for LGBTQ people by updating existing laws, like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, to explicitly ban discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. The law would also revise the Civil Rights Act to ban sex-based discrimination in public spaces and services, such as retail stores, pharmacies, and transit, as well as in federally funded programs.

On May 17, the House has passed the Equality Act in a 236 - 173 vote. The legislation now moves to the Senate for consideration. Call on Senators to fight for a vote on this bill.

  • Senator Duckworth | DC: 202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506

  • Senator Durbin | DC: 202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I'm calling to urge [NAME] to support H.R. 5, the Equality Act of 2019. LGBTQ people still face significant violence and discrimination at the workplace, in the housing market, and in everyday interactions. Civil rights protections must be expanded to include gender identity and sexual orientation as protected characteristics. Will Senator [NAME] fight to bring this bill up for a vote?

Action 2: Tell your MoC to Defund Hate

The appropriations process, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) budget—is underway. The first draft of the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which was released on June 4, included some key improvements over the status quo; for example, it proposes cutting the number of beds ICE can use to detain people, and taking back the money that Trump stole for his wall when he declared a fake emergency. But the bill isn’t perfect, and Democrats on the Appropriations Committee still need to hold strong to protect these gains and make key improvements.

The House Appropriations Committee will meet on Tuesday, June 11, to decide the funding levels for the agencies implementing Trump’s mass deportation agenda. This is our best chance to act to stop Trump’s deportation machine. If you care about ending Trump’s racist immigration policies—like separating, caging, and tear gassing families—make a call today.

Script For Appropriators: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I'm calling today to tell [MoC] to use [his/her] power as an appropriator to defund Trump’s deportation machine.

Funding for immigration enforcement has exploded under Trump, and his administration has used this money to separate, cage, and tear gas families, and to terrorize communities. Today, the DHS appropriations subcommittee will consider funding levels for those agencies. I ask that you use your power to defund hate by cutting funding for ICE and CBP. Additionally, I don’t think we should be giving Trump a slush fund for his deportation machine. I ask that you get rid of Trump’s deportation slush fund.

Will [MoC] commit to defunding hate by cutting funding for ICE and CBP and getting rid of Trump’s deportation slush fund?

Script For Non-Appropriators: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I'm calling today to tell [MoC] to sign the letter led by Reps. Jayapal, Pocan, Castro, and Chu calling on the House Appropriations Committee to #DefundHate.

Will [MoC] sign the letter to support reducing funding for Trump’s deportation machine, holding DHS, ICE and CBP accountable, and ending their ability to steal funds from other agencies to expand their ability to enforce Trump’s racist agenda?
