Wednesday, May 22 - Pass the RHA / Freedom from Aggressive Insurance Increases / Phone Bank for RHA

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Tell IL State Reps to Pass the Reproductive Health Act

Without the Reproductive Health Act (RHA), when Roe is overturned (not if) Illinois could have:

  • Lack of insurance coverage for abortion care and birth control

  • Mandatory spousal consent for abortion

  • 24-hour waiting periods

  • Bans on assisted reproductive techniques like in vitro fertilization (IVF).

The Reproductive Health Act (RHA), House Bill 2495, is all that stands between the women of Illinois and anti-choice extremists wanting to ban safe, legal abortion. Tell your rep to support this bill and call it to the floor today!

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling because I want you to support and vote YES on the Reproductive Health Act (HB 2495).

Extreme politicians are introducing, and right-wing anti-choice people are supporting, unconstitutional bills with one goal - to ban safe, legal abortion. With the current make-up of the Supreme Court and new threats to safe, legal abortion it is critical that Illinois lead in ensuring reproductive freedom is a reality for ALL Illinois women! Women’s rights are under attack and we need you to whatever you can to make sure this bill passes. Thank you.

Action 2: URGENT - Witness Slips for HB 471 by 11 a.m.

Each year, insurance premiums increase arbitrarily without explanation. Consumers are expected to pay 60-70% increases with no recourse, which is unacceptable in any other industry. The Illinois Department of Insurance can review rates but has no ability to reject unreasonable increases.

There is a solution: Rep. Bob Morgan has introduced the Freedom from Aggressive Insurance Increases Review Act (FAIIR), HB 471. FAIIR creates an independent rate review board that can reject unreasonable rate increases on your health insurance. The board would be selected by the governor and approved by the Senate with NO lobbyists allowed.

Thirty six states and Washington, D.C. already have some form of rate review and approval. These “prior approval” states see premium changes 9.7% lower than other states. New York state has saved consumers $314 million in proposed increases for 2019.

HB 471 is collecting witness slips for a hearing TODAY at 11 a.m. Please sign on as a proponent!

Action 3: Phone Bank for the Reproductive Health Act

Only passing the RHA will protect women’s reproductive rights in Illinois, so we’re phone banking to help get the word out. We will be calling people who are identified as being likely pro-choice voters. They should all be friendly to our cause. We are asking if they can commit to patch through to their State Legislator to support our legislative agenda. We will also write State Legislators and urge them to vote YES on the RHA
