Action 1: Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act
Prescription drug prices are substantially higher in the United States than in other high-income countries, and as a result, Americans spend more on prescription drugs than residents of other countries. Despite this, the government is not allowed to use its position as the largest purchaser of prescription drugs in the country to bargain for lower prices for patients.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) has introduced the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act (H.R. 1046) to give Medicare the power it needs to effectively negotiate with drug companies and bring drug prices down. Read more here.
Last Friday, HuffPost ran a story about how House Democratic leadership might cut a bad deal with Donald Trump to weaken legislation designed to lower prescription drug prices. But it doesn’t have to be like this -- H.R. 1046, Rep. Lloyd Doggett’s proposal, would force Big Pharma to make drugs more affordable while also protecting patients’ access to crucial medicines.
Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to urge [MoC] to co-sponsor H.R. 1046, Rep. Doggett’s Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act because it will bring down our obscenely high drug prices while protecting patients’ access to critical medicines. Will [MoC] commit to co-sponsoring H.R. 1046, the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act?

Action 2: Private Detention Facility Moratorium Act
HB 2040, The Private Detention Facility Moratorium Act, passed the IL Senate Executive Committee on April 30. The bill will move to the Senate floor for a vote soon. This bill would ban for-profit prisons in the state, including immigration detention centers.
Call on your state senator to support this bill!
Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to urge Senator [NAME] to vote yes on HB 2040, the Private Detention Facility Moratorium Act. Has the senator decided to support the bill?
(if YES) Thank you for your support!
(if NO) Can you tell me why the senator objects to this legislation?
(if not sure) I hope the senator will support us. This bill would reduce family separation, save taxpayer money, maintain safety in the community, and uphold the basic public policy of the state opposing private prisons. Thank you for your consideration.

Action 3: Handmaids Wanted in Springfield 5/15
This has been a harrowing time for women’s rights in America. Right now, we have a Supreme Court that could very well overturn Roe v. Wade and restrict access to healthcare. We can protect Illinois from the worst of the anti-choice agenda, but only if we pass the Reproductive Health Act (RHA).
Indivisible Illinois is joining forces with the Illinois Handmaids for a demonstration in Springfield on Wednesday, May 15th! Experienced activists will provide training and all the Handmaid gear that you’ll need.
