Action 1: Emergency Rally to Save Roe on MONDAY
Georgia. Alabama. Ohio. Indiana. Missouri. The list of states passing reckless, dangerous bans on abortion seems to grow by the day. One thing is now clear beyond any doubt – anti-abortion forces will not stop until Roe v. Wade is overturned and access to safe, legal abortion is severely curtailed. We must act now to save Roe.
Join us on Monday, May 20th at 5:00 p.m. at Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago (Adams and Dearborn) for a Rally to Save Roe!
We will be joined by a coalition of organizations committed to protecting access to women’s reproductive health care, and learn about how we can take action in Illinois. Right now, the Illinois House of Representatives is considering the Reproductive Health Act (House Bill 2495), a measure designed to protect and insure access to abortion care, contraceptives and maternal care in Illinois.
The rally also will feature a number of Handmaids, based on the characters from Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel about a future world. We do not want that story to move from fiction to reality. You can also sign up to be a handmaid! Get more information and signup as a Handmaid here
Join us for this event and spread the word.
When: Monday, May 20, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Federal Plaza (219 S. Dearborn, Chicago, IL)
Action 2: Witness Slip Roundup
Illinois’ unique system of witness slips makes it easy for citizens to weigh in on important bills quickly using an online form. Before a bill is heard in the Illinois General Assembly, the chairperson will read who has submitted witness slips and whether they support or oppose the bill. This helps inform legislators as to where Illinoisans and organizations stand before voting. Witness slips are a great and relatively quick way to make your voice heard in state government.
Here are some new priority bills collecting witness slips for hearings:
HB1633 has been rescheduled for a hearing on Tuesday, May 21 @ 5pm. This requires new witness slips and more phone calls. Stop the Koch brothers’ ALEC from making protests illegal. Read our UPDATED blog post
HB 1633 Criminal Law Committee Hearing on 5/21 (OPPONENT).
HB 1633 Subcommittee Hearing on 5/21 (OPPONENT).
SJRCA 1 - The Fair Tax Amendment is up in Committee on 5/20 – it is time to show the committee members that Illinois supports a Fair Tax. Show your support by taking 1 minute to file a witness slip in support of SJRCA 1.
The Fair Tax Amendment will get rid of the Illinois Constitution’s requirement that millionaires and minimum wage workers are taxed at the same rate. It will allow for a more just tax system, where people with higher incomes pay higher rates and people with lower incomes pay lower rates. Opponents to the Fair Tax are filing slips as you read this, we need your help to make sure that legislators see support for the Fair Tax!
SJRCA 1 Fair Tax Amendment (PROPONENT)
Fix the Firearm Owner ID (FOID) Act
Please file a witness slip as a PROPONENT of SB1966 The Fix the FOID Act before 8:30am on Tuesday, May 21. This bill will stop the next Aurora shooting by…
Requiring fingerprints as part of a FOID card application
Requiring universal background checks on ALL gun sales
Requiring renewals of FOID cards every 5 years - as opposed to the current 10 years.
It closes the loopholes in Illinois's FOID card system that allowed the shooter in Aurora at the Henry Pratt Co. in February 2019 to kill five people and injure several others.
SB1966 The Fix the FOID Act (PROPONENT)

Action 3: Tell Congress to Protect Transgender Troops
In this week’s Indivisible Chicago Podcast, we heard from Air Force LTC B. Fram, who has served sixteen years in the military, is literally a rocket scientist, and is openly trans. B. is the communications director for SPAR*TA, an organization that supports transgender service members. B. talked about coming out and what a future featuring a transgender ban would be like.
The military has begun enforcement of the transgender military ban. Congress must act immediately to protect the thousands of members of our military who identify as transgender.
In the summer of 2017, Trump announced via Twitter that the US military would no longer allow most transgender troops to serve, baselessly asserting that these individuals burden the military. Ex-Secretary of Defense James Mattis released the official policy banning many transgender people from military service in 2018, despite a complete lack of evidence that transgender people’s service harms the US military in any way.
Several lower courts issued injunctions blocking the ban’s implementation, pending a ruling from the Ninth Circuit Court on the rule’s legality. However, the Department of Justice asked the Supreme Court to override these injunctions and allow the ban to go into effect even as lower courts review the policy. On January 22, a divided Supreme Court ruled that the ban could be reinstated for now, despite ongoing litigation in the lower courts. Now, the nearly 15,000 transgender individuals who serve in the US military face an uncertain future.
To address this issue, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Representative Jackie Speier (D-CA) have introduced legislation to allow transgender military members to continue their service, uninterrupted by Trump’s bigoted and hateful transgender service ban. Call your reps and make sure they support this much needed legislation.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible.
I'm calling in support of [H.R. 1032 for House/S. 373 for Senate]. Trump's transgender military service ban does nothing to protect national security and harms the nearly 15,000 transgender individuals currently serving our nation.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
