Tuesday, April 9 - Oppose the Caps Deal / Bond Reform in IL / Illinois Gun Violence Prevention Coalition Summit

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Tell Your Rep to Oppose the Caps Deal for Military Spending

This week, the House is likely to vote on a “caps deal” to raise spending limits for defense and non-defense programs. (You can learn more about what this means in our explainer here.) House Democrats have agreed to give the Pentagon billions more in funding when it can't even account for what it already spends. The deal would also leave domestic spending on things like health care and education relatively low. We oppose the bill in its current form, and urge the House to vote it down.

Call your Representative and ask them to vote “NO” when it comes to the floor.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to urge [REPRESENTATIVE] to vote NO on H.R. 2021, Investing For the People Act, in its current form. This spending proposal would dramatically raise Pentagon spending levels, continuing to fuel our endless wars. The Pentagon already can’t account for the money it spends and failed its first audit. I want to see Congress fully investing in domestic needs like health care and education, not filling defense contractors’ pockets with the bloated military budget. Will [REPRESENTATIVE] commit to voting no on H.R. 2021? I’ll be following up to see how they voted.

Action 2: TONIGHT - Winning Transformative Bond Reform in IL

This year, Illinois residents have an opportunity to demand transformative bond reform for our state! We’re calling for an end to money bond and other changes that would vastly reduce pretrial punishment and surveillance and restore the presumption of innocence for all. Join the Coalition to End Money Bond for a teach-in on our current campaign goals, upcoming opportunities to engage with decision-makers, and what a truly just pretrial system might look like.
