Friday, April 5 - End War in Yemen / Bond Reform in IL / Reproductive Health and Access Lobby Day

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: End the Illegal War in Yemen

The United States is enabling war crimes in Yemen, and even Trump’s most vocal enablers are turning against him on this one. The Republican-controlled Senate voted to end U.S. support for Saudi war crimes in Yemen, since Trump won’t do it himself.

The Democratic-controlled House also voted to end U.S. support for this cruel war in February 2019, but, in order to send it to Trump’s desk, they must now pass it one more time. Their task is to reject any Republican procedural maneuvers, like motions to recommit, to derail this historic bill’s passage. Learn more here.

Call your representative now and tell them to pass the Yemen resolution, and reject the motion to recommit.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I want to urge Representative [NAME] to vote in favor of the bipartisan resolution to end U.S. involvement in the Saudi-led Yemen war, and to REJECT any motion to recommit when this bill moves to the floor.

Congress never authorized this conflict, and the Constitution demands that we the people, through our elected representatives, decide when and where we go to war --  not the president. It is essential that the House pass this clean resolution just as the Senate did, without additional language through a motion to recommit.

Yemen is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, and we’re helping it happen. I will be closely watching for [MEMBER OF CONGRESS]’s vote in favor of the Yemen resolution, and against the motion to recommit.

Action 3: Reproductive Health and Access Lobby Day on 5/1

Reproductive rights are at risk in Illinois. With the possibility that the Supreme Court will hear a case challenging Roe v. Wade within the year, we need to eliminate barriers to reproductive health care and make sure that our reproductive rights are recognized by Illinois law.

Come to Springfield on May 1 and lobby your legislators on two key legislative measures:

  • The Reproductive Health Act which establishes the right to reproductive health care, repeals dangerous restrictions on abortions, and requires insurance plans to cover abortion. By enacting the RHA, Illinois will become a haven for reproductive health care on a post-Roe United States.

  • Repeal of the Teen Endangerment Act (Parental Notice of Abortion) which requires a healthcare provider to notify an adult family member prior to performing an abortion on a minor. This law puts young women at risk and creates a medically unnecessary barrier to care.

Sign up to join Planned Parenthood of Illinois in Springfield on May 1!
