Action 1: Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act
Prescription drug prices are substantially higher in the United States than in other high-income countries, and as a result, Americans spend more on prescription drugs than residents of other countries. Despite this, the government is not allowed to use its position as the largest purchaser of prescription drugs in the country to bargain for lower prices for patients.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) has introduced the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act (H.R. 1046) to give Medicare the power it needs to effectively negotiate with drug companies and bring drug prices down. Read more here.
Last Friday, HuffPost ran a story about how House Democratic leadership might cut a bad deal with Donald Trump to weaken legislation designed to lower prescription drug prices. But it doesn’t have to be like this -- H.R. 1046, Rep. Lloyd Doggett’s proposal, would force Big Pharma to make drugs more affordable while also protecting patients’ access to crucial medicines.
Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to urge [MoC] to co-sponsor H.R. 1046, Rep. Doggett’s Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act because it will bring down our obscenely high drug prices while protecting patients’ access to critical medicines. Will [MoC] commit to co-sponsoring H.R. 1046, the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act?

Action 2: Spread the Word About H.R. 1
Did you know that our Blue Wave Congress has passed the most significant electoral integrity bill since the 1965 Voting Rights Act? You may not know, since Trump tends to dominate the news most days.
The bill is called H.R. 1, the For the People Act. The sweeping bill covers three very important areas:
Expanding and Regulating Voting Rights
Transparency and Ethics
Money in Politics Reform
The bill is now in the Senate, where Mitch McConnell is stonewalling it. However, Congressional lawmakers are working to break apart H.R. 1 bringing separate bills to the floor for a vote. And these bills are going to need as much support as possible.
Action 3: Free Advocacy Training on 4/29
One of the cornerstones the Restore Justice Foundation is free advocacy training to produce a strong, diverse base of people who can strategize, educate, advocate, and lead criminal justice reform work. And together, board and staff members at Restore Justice have decades of experience passing both radical and incremental reforms in Illinois.
At the free advocacy training session, you’ll learn about legislative advocacy, and understand when and why it is useful. You’ll familiarize yourself with how a bill becomes a law in Illinois and develop skills to help you navigate a day in Springfield.
