Action 2: Call State Reps to Ban Private Prisons

There is an effort afoot to bring a private, for-profit ICE detention center to the state of Illinois. That’s why State Rep. Kelly Cassidy is sponsoring HB 2040, a bill that would ban for-profit prisons in the state, including immigration detention centers.

The bill pass out of the House Labor and Commerce Committee and continues to work its way through the House. Call on your rep to support the bill for a more welcoming Illinois.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [REP] to support HB 2040, a bill that would ban for-profit prisons in Illinois, including immigrant detention centers. I believe Illinois should be a welcoming place for all immigrants and that no company should profit out of imprisoning human beings. Will [REP] support this bill?

Action 3: Canvass for Robert Murphy Saturday-Sunday

Join Indivisible Chicago Northwest Side this weekend to canvass for Robert Murphy for 39th Ward Alderman. ICNW endorsed Robert as the only independent progressive candidate in this race.

This is the last weekend for us to make a difference in this important race. Whether you live in the 39th Ward or not, the makeup of the City Council affects all of us. If you joined us to support Underwood and Casten in the midterms, this will be an easy walk in our own city to help get out the vote.

With the potential for low turnout, every vote is going to matter. We're running shifts Saturday 10am-1pm, 1pm-4pm, and Sunday 12pm-3pm. Extra credit: Sign up to help out on Election Day!
