Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Public Comment to Protect SNAP

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is at the core of our nation’s response to hunger. The Trump Administration's Department of Agriculture has proposed a new rule that threatens to leave over 400,000 Illinois residents hungry. Read more about the proposed SNAP changes.

You can now submit a comment to the Secretary of Agriculture to protect SNAP and preserve food access.

Make sure to write a personal comment that can include facts like:

  • The proposed rule will increase hunger among our most vulnerable neighbors.

  • People who can work already do. This rule would punish those who face significant barriers to employment, such as homelessness, undiagnosed mental illness, long-term unemployment, criminal backgrounds, low educational attainment, or living in areas where there simply aren’t enough jobs.

  • States need flexibility. Here in Illinois, almost every county receives a waiver to protect residents from hunger during challenging economic circumstances. Up to 414,000 people in our state could be affected by this rule. More than 35 other states and territories also request waivers.

  • SNAP strengthens our economy. In addition to putting needed food on the table, SNAP benefits support local food retailers.

Script for Non-Sponsors: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [REP] to publicly support establishing a Select Committee For A Green New Deal in the House Rules for the 116th Congress. Establishing a Select Committee For A Green New Deal would demonstrate that Democrats understand the kind of action we need to take to prevent catastrophic levels of global warming. Thank you.
