Tuesday, March 12 - Presidential Tax Transparency / Support National Carbon Fee / Background Check Bill

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: DEADLINE TOMORROW - Witness Slips for the Presidential Tax Transparency Initiative

Indivisible Chicago has helped a bill! SB-145, the Presidential Tax Transparency Initiative, amends Illinois Election Code to require all candidates for President and Vice President submit the most recent 5 years of full and complete tax returns with their initial candidate filing material prior to the Primary election and prior to the General election. Any candidate who does not comply will not be on the ballot. The bill also establishes a clear definition of "Tax Return."

This was a norm for presidential candidates and we believe that it must be codified into law. Additionally, the states have the right to establish reasonable rules and requirements for ballot access and it has become clear that tax returns qualify.

Submit a witness slip in favor of the bill before 2 p.m. tomorrow (3/13).

Action 2: Tell Your Alderman to Support a National Carbon Fee

The Chicago city council meets this Wednesday and will vote on a resolution stating that Chicago supports a national carbon fee and dividend policy. Chicago has said it wants to be a leader on climate change, and this is a way for our city to show that it truly supports strong national legislation on climate change.

The Energy Innovation & Carbon Dividend Act was recently introduced in the House. This bill would put a price on carbon and return the money back to the American people as a monthly dividend, and as a result will cut carbon emissions 40% by 2030. We want to show Congress that the third largest city in the nation wants this legislation, and we can do that by passing R2017-915. Please call your alderman before Wednesday and ask them to vote yes.

Action 3: Tell the Senate - Background Checks Now

The House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill to close dangerous loopholes and require a background check for every gun sale.

Now it’s the Senate’s turn to pass background checks and send a bill to the president’s desk.

Congress must ensure that dangerous people who wouldn’t pass a background check can’t go on to buy a gun anyway—online or at gun shows. It’s a necessary step to address our nation’s growing gun violence epidemic.
