Action 1: Tell Congress - No More Border Troops
The Pentagon is planning to deploy 3,750 more troops to the border for “surveillance,” bringing the total number of troops there to 6,000. Active duty military was first deployed to the border in October as Trump fomented false outrage at a migrant “caravan,” but they have been extended twice. ABC News estimates the costs to date of this ridiculous “mission” at $682 million.
According to NPR:
When Defense Department officials testified before the House Armed Services Committee last week, they didn't mention the upcoming troop deployment. Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., who chairs the committee, released a statement criticizing what he called a lack of transparency.
Tell Congress that this expensive deployment is unnecessary and to block any funding for more troops at the border to prop up Trump’s racist agenda.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [MoC] to work to block any funding for almost 4,000 more troops along the southern border. The pointless mission has cost taxpayers $682 million already, and we should not spend one more dime on Trump’s racist agenda. Thank you.
Action 2: TODAY - Protest New TIF Development
We encourage anyone who can to attend today's Community Development Council meeting to protest the multimillion dollar TIF funding for the "78" Roosevelt/Clark Redevelopment Project.
Like the Lincoln Yards project, this development would take away TIF funding from the communities who need it. After the CDC meeting, this project will go before the City Council Zoning and Finance Committees and then the full City Council.
When: Today, Tuesday, February 5 at 1 p.m.
Where: Chicago City Hall, 2nd floor (121 N. LaSalle)
If you can't make today's meeting, contact your alderman to voice your disapproval of this development project. We need to stop the misuse of TIF funding!
Action 3: DEADLINE TOMORROW - Witness Slip Against Voter ID in IL
Voter identification laws are a part of an ongoing strategy to roll back decades of progress on voting rights. Voter ID laws deprive many voters of their right to vote, reduce participation, and stand in direct opposition to our country’s trend of including more Americans in the democratic process.
Many Americans do not have one of the forms of identification states acceptable for voting. These voters are disproportionately low-income, racial and ethnic minorities, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Such voters more frequently have difficulty obtaining ID, because they cannot afford or cannot obtain the underlying documents that are a prerequisite to obtaining government-issued photo ID card.
HB0243, the Elections Photo ID Law, was just submitted in the Illinois House, and the chamber is accepting witness slips before the February 6 hearing. Please submit a witness slip in opposition of this bill to protect voting rights in our state!
