Thursday, February 28 - Tell Senators to Support Green New Deal / Thank Reps for Voting Against Emergency / The Witness Slip Project

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Tell Senators We Need a Green New Deal

"What in the heck is this?" said Senator Durbin in response to reading the Green New Deal.

We hope he knows what it is by now! Yesterday, Sunrise Movement Chicago rallied downtown to tell our Senators loudly and clearly that cosponsoring the Green New Deal is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Our planet’s future is at stake, and time is running out.

The Green New Deal is an ambitious, progressive policy framework that would protect the planet and grow the economy. Like the original New Deal, the Green New Deal represents a massive investment in America’s people and infrastructure—but with the additional goals of spending on projects that will transition America to a green economy, and ensuring that these investments are targeted to promote “social, economic, racial, regional, and gender-based justice and equality.” Get more details about the Green New Deal.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [SENATOR] to publicly support the Green New Deal legislation. We are running out of time to take action to prevent catastrophic climate change. I will be watching for the Senator’s response to his bill. Thank you.

Action 2: Thank Your Rep for Voting Against Trump’s Fake Emergency

Trump launched a full-fledged attack on our democracy when he declared a national emergency to build his wall. Make no mistake: this is an anti-democratic power grab rooted in racism. And, we are not going to let him get away with it.

Thankfully, the House voted on Tuesday 245-182 on a resolution to terminate President Trump's declaration of a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border. Thirteen Republicans joined Democrats in opposing this declaration. The resolution now heads to the Senate, where Mitch McConnell MUST bring it to the floor for a vote.

Let’s thank our Representatives who stood up to Trump’s racist border conspiracy. If your Rep did not, call and ask them why.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to thank [REP] for voting against Trump’s fake emergency on Tuesday. I’m glad that my representative stood up for the rule of law. Thank you.

Action 3: Join the Witness Slip Project on Facebook

Even though Illinois is a blue state, we have a long way to go on progressive policies. Just this week, the Illinois General Assembly has considered bills on gun control, education, women’s rights, and more. Illinois’ unique system of witness slips makes it easy for citizens to weigh in on these bills quickly using an online form.

Before a bill is heard in committee, the chairperson will read who has submitted witness slips and whether they support or oppose the bill. This helps inform legislators as to where Illinoisans and organizations stand before voting. Witness slips are a great and relatively quick way to make your voice heard in state government.

New witness slips come up almost every day that the legislature is in session, sometimes only with a few hours’ notice. The best way to keep up with new slips is to join The Witness Slip Project on Facebook. This nonpartisan group features new slips and gives some background on each bill.
