Friday, January 4 - Renew the Violence Against Women Act / Lincoln Yards TIF District
Actions You Can Take Today
Action 1: Call on Congress to renew the Violence Against Women Act
Action 1: Renew Violence Against Women Act
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) officially expired at midnight last Friday due to the partial government shutdown.
According to the Huffington Post, “grants already awarded before the shutdown will not be affected, but future payments for anti-domestic and anti-sexual violence programs funded by VAWA will be cut off until the legislation is reauthorized.”
Don’t let Congress forget about VAWA during this shutdown. Call on them to reauthorize this bill immediately!

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [MoC] to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, which expired last week. We should not be placing anti-violence programs at risk during this shutdown. Thank you.
Action 2: Slow Down Lincoln Yards TIF District
The proposed Cortland/Chicago River TIF District – and the related Lincoln Yards development plan – do not represent equitable, balanced development. The planning process has not been transparent, comprehensive, or responsive, and it has not challenged the developers to show what they could build without $800 million in public TIF funds.
Mayor Emanuel wants to fast-track this TIF for approval just before he steps down, but this is not accountable decision-making. Sign this petition to urge Rahm to defer any further decisions on the TIF and Lincoln Yards until a new Mayor and City Council take office.
