Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: TOMORROW - Housing Day of Action for Rent Control

With a new Illinois legislature in session, now is the time to fight for rent control. Already we have seen the real estate industry fight against rent control in other states like California's Prop 10, and they will not stop there. We expect heavy pushback from big money at the state level, and so we need to show our legislators that we will not stand for anything less than passing the most comprehensive and well-constructed rent control plan in the United States to date.

We have recognized for more than seven decades that housing is a human right. Yet we still have people on the streets in this bitter cold, and the big developers that are gentrifying neighborhoods in Chicago like Pilsen and Logan Square are a huge reason why.

Going against big developers requires us all to stand together now. Rent control will create stability in the rental market where more than half of all renters around the state, including here in Chicago, are rent-burdened, defined by the federal government as paying more than 30% of your income in rent.

We ask you to join us on Friday for a short march and demonstration of our people power. Stand up for people across the income spectrum, for the disabled, the displaced, domestic violence victims, and more that will be helped instantly by tying rent increases to local inflation standards (CPI-U) and stop scumlords from evicting people from their homes without just cause.

When: TOMORROW, Friday, February 1 from 11 a.m. to noon

Action 2: Tell Congress to Investigate Security Clearances

On January 24, 2019, NBC News released a report confirming that Carl Kline, a Trump-appointed security official, approved Jared Kushner’s top-secret security clearance status against the advice of two career White House security experts. Kushner’s receipt of top-secret clearance despite his dubious financial entanglements, lack of foreign policy experience, omissions on his security clearance application, and known vulnerability to manipulation by foreign powers is deeply troubling. Disturbingly, NBC reported that Kline granted at least 30 other Trump officials high-level clearance despite objections from security specialists.

The House Oversight Committee, led by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) has already launched an investigation into the White House’s security clearance process. The NBC report makes it clear the Senate must immediately follow suit. Furthermore, both chambers must call on Carl Kline to testify publicly about why he approved security clearance for Kushner and others against the recommendations of career security experts.
