Wednesday May 15 - No War with Iran / Green New Deal Town Hall / Letters to Voters

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Tell your MoCs to Prevent a New War in Iran

Donald Trump and his war cabinet seem to be itching for a new war with Iran. First, the Trump administration violated the Iran nuclear deal. Then, they mounted an Iraq War-style campaign to prime the public. Now, they’re trying to provoke a reaction from Iran. Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton has been calling for war with Iran for more than a decade and now he’s asked for a new military plan against Iran. The plan presented Thursday envisions sending as many as 120,000 troops to the Middle East. Learn more here.

For those who recall the lead-in to the Iraq War, this all probably feels pretty familiar. But history must not repeat itself. It’s essential that Congress use its powers to stop this march to war.

Congress needs to hear from you today. Congress must deny Trump the authority to start a new war with Iran. Tell your members of Congress (MoCs) to co-sponsor H.R. 2354 / S. 1039 to explicitly deny him this authority!

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling {PERSON} because I’m very concerned about the possibility of a new war with Iran.

Trump foolishly violated the nuclear deal and put it in danger of falling apart, even though Iran was complying and it was keeping us all safer. Now John Bolton and the war cabinet are escalating tensions. It feels a lot like Iraq War 2.0.

Will {PERSON} co-sponsor [H.R. 2454/S.1039] and issue a public statement urging diplomacy, not war with Iran? I will be closely watching for {PERSON}’s actions on this and following up.

Action 3: Write Letters to Voters and Flip Congress

Swing Left Chicago is hard at work contacting voters across the country. Important local races with national consequences are being decided by margins; of less than 1% in some cases. Preparing letters to key voters is a proven way to increase turnout.

Come out on Monday to have a drink with friendly Swing Left volunteers and help the cause.
