Action 1: TODAY - Safe Zones Rally

We are running out of time on the Immigration Safe Zones Act (SB 35)!

Governor Rauner only has until August 28 to say whether he will veto or sign the bill. We have heard rumors that he won't, and we want to make sure he is listening to us. If Governor Rauner cares about the safety of our communities, he must sign the Safe Zones Act, NOW!

Join us for a rally TONIGHT to show your support for this bill.

When: Wednesday, August 8 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Where: James R. Thompson Center (100 W Randolph St.)
RSVP and share on Facebook

Action 2: DEADLINE TODAY - Help Fund DACA Renewals

Protection for All Movement is an undocumented-led group of Chicago volunteers organizing to raise funds for the renewal fees of DACA recipients. Their goal is to help DACA recipients who currently qualify for renewal but do not have the funds to cover the renewal fee of $495.

TODAY Judge Hanen will issue a preliminary injunction hearing in Texas v. Nielsen. Although we do not know if Judge Hanen will issue a preliminary injunction challenging the DACA program on that day, organizations are urging DACA recipients whose DACA will expire in 2018 or 2019, to renew before August 8, 2018.

Allies, we need your help. Your donation will help current DACA recipients in Illinois, prioritizing DACA recipients in the Chicagoland area, facing this SUDDEN financial hardship to apply for renewal of a two-year work permit and reprieve from deportation. All donations will ONLY go towards application processing fees.

Please donate if you have the means to help DACA recipients cover the cost of their permit renewal TODAY to avoid deportation.

Action 3: End the Detention of Dreamer Sergio Salazar

Starting on July 17, Sergio "Mapache" Salazar, a recent high school graduate and Dreamer who came to the US at two years old, joined others in peacefully demonstrating outside of the San Antonio ICE offices to protest the separation of families at the border. On July 28, they were attacked by a mob of around 20 masked individuals from Patriot Front, the Texas-based white supremacist, neo-Nazi group.

On August 3, Sergio was cornered, arrested, and forced into the back of a truck by ICE officials when he stepped away from an ICE protest he was participating in. He was transported to an area behind a nearby, abandoned Walmart where they confiscated his personal items, shackled him, and placed him in a van that transported him to Pearsall Detention Center. At this point, Sergio was unaware that his DACA renewal had been denied on August 2. Shortly after his arrest, FBI agents attempted to interrogate him. As Sergio reports, authorities at Pearsall proceeded to tell him he was denied DACA renewal for being a "bad person," and they asked him to comply with a request to provide information on protesters he had connections with at the demonstration where he was arrested. In exchange, they offered to help him with his DACA renewal. When he declined to speak to the FBI, he was then transferred to Webb County Detention Center in Laredo, Texas.

Upon being processed at Webb County Detention Center, the FBI attempted to interrogate Sergio again, without access to an attorney. They told him they had a search warrant for his cell phone based on accusations, as Sergio explains, related to impeding an officer and threats of bomb making. Sergio has never been in trouble with the law and is strictly nonviolent. Sergio is an aspiring filmmaker and was his high school film teacher's "favorite student."

RAICES represents Sergio and helped him to file his DACA renewal. Call on the San Antonio ICE office to free Sergio now!

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m from Chicago. I’d like to leave a message for Daniel Bible. I'm calling to demand the immediate release of Dreamer Sergio Salazar from the Webb County Detention center, his "A" number is 207-966-313. Attacks on non-violent peaceful protestors is an unethical and immoral treatment of immigrants by ICE and DHS. Thank you for your time and attention.
