Wednesday, August 22 - Call on Rauner to Sign SB 2868 / Safe Zones Rally / Support Prison Workers’ Strike

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: DEADLINE TODAY - Call on Rauner to Sign SB 2868

Nearly 1.5 million people in Illinois (nearly 12 percent) are food insecure, meaning they struggle to put enough food on their tables. The emergency food system in Illinois consists of food banks that leverage charitable donations and federal funding to acquire millions of pounds of food to distribute through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, schools, and other community organizations. In Illinois, no state funds are appropriated for food for the emergency food system.

SB 2868, which is now sitting on the Governor’s desk, would support the Hunger Relief Fund, which was established in 2012 to allow Illinois state income tax filers to allocate all or a portion of their tax refund to provide an additional funding source for Illinois’ hunger relief efforts by supporting food banks.

In previous years, the Hunger Relief Fund was did not meet the $100,000 threshold required to remain active on Illinois’ standard individual income tax form. SB 2868 instructs the Illinois Department of Revenue to include the Hunger Relief Fund in the standard individual income tax form for 2018 filings.

The Governor must act by TODAY, August 22, so make your voice heard today.

Action 2: TOMORROW - Safe Zones Rally

Why hasn't Governor Rauner signed the Immigration Safe Zones Act (SB35) into law? Why doesn't he sign a bill that would limit ICE's access to schools, libraries, courthouses and hospitals? If Gov. Rauner cares about keeping our communities safe, he would support legislation that moves towards making Illinois a truly welcoming state for all immigrants.

Gov. Rauner needs to take action and support immigrant communities NOW! Time is running out for him to sign the Safe Zones Act (SB 35), No Registry Bill (SB 3488), and the VOICES Act (SB 34). Join us to send a loud and clear message that we need Gov. Rauner to stand with us.

When: Thursday, August 23 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: at Metropolitan Correctional Center (71 W Van Buren St.)
RSVP and Share on Facebook

Action 3: Support Prison Workers’ Strike

Yesterday, incarcerated men and women across the country went on strike to protest what is essentially modern American slavery: forced labor for wages as low as 4 cents an hour.

According to The Guardian, “in addition to a refusal to work, inmates engaging with the strike plan to go on hunger strikes, hold sit-in protests and stage a boycott of commissaries, collect phone calls and other payment streams where private and state-owned companies make money out of them.”

President Trump and Jeff Sessions continue to fight any prison reforms and impose harsh mandatory sentences for nonviolent offenses. These prisoners are standing up for their rights and bravely fighting a system that is stacked against them. Please show your support for their movement in any way that you can:
