Wednesday, August 15 - Review All Kavanaugh Documents / Keystone XL Pipeline Public Comment

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Call on Senators to Review All Kavanaugh Documents

Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh is an experienced attorney, judge, Republican political appointee, and the author of numerous legal opinions, lectures, transcripts, emails, and policies. The record contains everything from his testimony about Bush-era torture policies to his various stances on whether a president can be compelled to testify before a special counsel. The American people deserve a thorough examination of Kavanaugh’s extensive body of work before his nomination can be sent to the Senate floor for a confirmation vote.

Yet on July 18th, Senate Judiciary Committee chair Chuck Grassley made clear he has little intention of doing so, saying he intends to only probe "relevant" documents. Both Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Kagan generated substantial volumes of documents accumulated in their previous positions, and both nominees had these documents released as part of their confirmation process. In contrast, it appears that Grassley is choosing to push this nominee through in secrecy, attempting to ignore large portions of Kavanaugh’s record. While his motives are unstated, this decision seems to indicate he would rather avoid the emergence of any controversial issue in Kavanaugh's record and have him confirmed well before mid-term election results could reduce the Republican party's ability to force the acceptance of a nominee.

Senator Dick Durbin has already condemned the GOP’s refusal to release the Kavanaugh documents, but Senator Duckworth has remained silent. Call Durbin to thank him and tell Duckworth to demand a transparent and thorough examination of Kavanaugh's record before sending his nomination to the floor of the senate for confirmation.

I’m calling to urge [SENATOR NAME] to insist that the Judiciary Committee commit to a transparent and thorough review of Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh's extensive body of work before referring his nomination to the full Senate. Senators must review all of his available records before voting. Thank you.

Action 2: Keystone XL Pipeline Public Comment

The Trump Administration doesn’t give a damn about our climate or communities. That’s why they're trying to fast track the Keystone XL pipeline.

They just released a hastily done Environmental Assessment, and we have to call them out on it. This pipeline – like any fossil fuel project – threatens our water, our communities and our climate.

We have until August 29th to give public comment on this sham review. If thousands of us submit comments, they’ll hear our objections loud and clear.

This isn't the first time the Trump Administration has bypassed the process to move this pipeline forward, and yet after 505 days since he "approved" Keystone XL, TransCanada has not been able to start construction. We’re going to make sure this pipeline never gets built.

Make sure the Trump Administration knows that thousands of people are willing to stand up to his fossil fuel agenda – submit a public comment today.
