Action 1: Call on Your MoC to Visit an Immigrant Detention Center

The July 26 deadline for the federal government to reunite thousands of separated children with their parents is two days away. Yesterday, the Trump administration told the court that it had reunited or 'appropriately discharged' just 1,187 of the 2,551 children ages five and older who were forcibly separated from their parents. The government has also reunited just 58 out of 103 children who are under the age of five and whose reunions were required by the first deadline, July 10.

The government identified 1,634 class members who are eligible for reunification and are in various stages of the process. However, in the same federal court filing, the government has claimed that the separated children of 917 parents are either not eligible, or “not yet known to be eligible,” for reunification.

As of July 20, the Trump administration reported that it had 37 children in government custody who have “not yet been matched” to a parent from whom they were taken. Additionally, when asked in court, the administration was not able to provide a count of the number of parents who were released from ICE custody and whose locations are still unknown. Learn more about the current state of family separation from the ACLU.

Although the GOP is blocking any immigration measures in Congress, Democrats can do more to call attention to this issue by visiting immigration detention centers where adults, children and families are currently being held in our state. Senator Dick Durbin did this last month when he visited detained immigrant children in Chicago.

Your MoC can do more! Call on them to keep the focus on this issue by visiting immigrants in detention and bringing the press with them.

Script: Hi, my name is {NAME} and I'm a constituent in the {ZIP CODE} and member of Indivisible. I’m calling today to ask {MoC} to do more to reunite immigrant families by visiting an immigrant detention center in Illinois where adults or children are being held. Despite court pressure, the Trump administration is still causing irreparable harm to thousands of children and parents due to their failure to reunite immigrant families. {MoC} needs to do whatever {he/she} can do to keep this issue in the news and shed light on these human rights abuses. Thank you.

Action 2: Thank Senator Durbin for Keeping the Focus on Family Separation

On June 22, Senator Dick Durbin visited 66 immigrant children being housed in Chicago as victims of Trump and the GOP’s cruel immigration policies. Since then, he has continued to be a strong voice for immigrant rights, and he continues to shine a spotlight on this issue even during a chaotic news cycle.

Call Senator Durbin to thank him for this and ask him to keep fighting.

Script: Hi, my name is {NAME} and I'm a constituent in the {ZIP CODE} and member of Indivisible. I’m calling today to thank Senator Durbin for his work on immigrant rights. He continues to highlight the issue of family separation and human rights abuses being carried out by ICE. I’m asking the Senator to keep up this work as the Trump administration continues to miss court-ordered deadlines to reunite families. We must pressure Congress to act in any way possible. Thank you.
