Action 1: Tell Our Reps to Speak Out Against Trump’s New, Cruel Immigration Policy

On April 6, 2018, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Trump administration would be implementing a “zero-tolerance” policy for those who entered the country illegally: simply put, anyone—including families—who crosses the Southwest border or attempts to cross the border is subject to criminal prosecution and deportation. Anyone who is charged is jailed, and their children are taken away from them.

Yes, that is now the official U.S. policy. Let that sink in.

Unfortunately, family separation is not new. In fact, take a look at what was happening under President Obama. However, what is new is the practice of ripping children away from their parents at the border. That's what's happening now as a result of the "zero-tolerance" policy.

In the two weeks since the policy was implemented, over 600 children have already been ripped away from their parents. That includes babies as young as 18 months old being ripped from their mother’s arms and being placed in shelters, with parents not knowing where their children are or whether they are doing okay.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the damage to children by separating them from their parents is severe, and includes depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Right now, the Trump administration is causing hundreds of immigrant children severe damage all for the sake of enforcing a xenophobic agenda.

Call on MoCs to tell them you want them to put a stop to it. While we won't be able to really stop the harm being done until we remove Trump from office, Members of Congress need to be speaking out against what’s happening to immigrant families and demand that the Trump administration put an end to this policy.

Call Senator Duckworth | DC: 202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506
Call Senator Durbin | DC: 202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952

Script: Hi, my name is {NAME} and I'm a constituent in the {ZIP CODE} and member of Indivisible. I’m calling today to tell [Senator/Rep] to speak out against the Trump administration’s separation of immigrant families at the Southern border. This policy is cruel and inhumane and needs to stop. I think it’s very important for Congress to speak out against what is happening to families and to practice oversight on the Trump administration’s immigration actions. I’d also like [MoC] to cosponsor the HELP for Separated Children Act, which strengthens protections for immigrant families and children.

Action 2: Call on State Reps to Fight Gun Trafficking

This week, the Illinois House Judiciary Criminal committee is scheduled to hear debate on SB 337, the Combating illegal Gun Traffic Act.  This important legislation is a bipartisan effort that came about after Governor Rauner vetoed SB 1657, the Gun Dealer Licensing Act.  It overwhelmingly passed the Illinois Senate last week.

The bill would require Federal Firearms License holders to be certified by Illinois State Police. The certification will implement best practices to help reduce guns entering into the illegal market and allow state and local law enforcement to crack down on corrupt dealers.  Included among the requirements are: background checks for employees, security requirements to protect our communities, and safe business requirements that would prohibit any new licensee from being within 500 feet of any school.

It’s just common sense, but that doesn’t always prevail in the state capitol.  We need your help. Call on your State Representative to help pass SB 337 into law.

Script: Hi. My name is _____ and I’m a constituent of State Rep. _____ calling from [zip code]. Thousands of people are shot every year in Illinois, devastating families and communities across the state. We can prevent many of these tragedies by getting serious about the sources of illegal guns. The Combating Illegal Gun Trafficking Act (SB 337, Amendment 3) encourages better business practices among gun dealers and holds corrupt dealers accountable. I urge Rep. ____ to vote for SB 337, Amendment 3, a bill that will keep constituents safe and protected from guns that fall into the wrong hands. Thank you so much for your time!

Action 3: Postcards 4 Choice on 6/10

Logan Square Solidarity Sunday is hosting an event to write postcards of love and solidarity to clinics here in the Midwest. Whether it was for birth control, that fun annual pap, STD testing and treatment, or yes, an abortion, clinics have been there for us -- so it's time for us to be there for them.

The event will include a discussion on the important role clinics play in many different communities with a panel of people directly involved in clinic services. They'll lead a conversation about how support of clinics can be truly intersectional, and what we can do to help defend them. There will be a great comedian on board to MC, plus food and drink available to fuel your postcard writing!

All of the money raised will go to the Midwest Access Coalition, which helps women traveling to, from, and within the Midwest access a safe, legal abortion. Tickets are $17.89 before the event, and $20 at the door.

When: Sunday, June 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Elastic Arts (3429 West Diversey Avenue #208)
