Thursday, May 24 - Witness Slips for Safer Gun Transfers / Tell Rauner to Sign Crosscheck Bill / Mueller Rally

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: URGENT - Witness Slip for Safer Gun Transfers

Illinois state reps will soon be voting on a bill, SB 2387 (Mussman/Morrison), that was filed in response to the recent shooting at a Waffle House in Tennessee. The bill states that if someone's Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card is revoked and they want to transfer their guns to another FOID card holder, that person must sign and file an affidavit saying they are aware that person's FOID card has been revoked and they will not return the firearms.

The 29-year-old Waffle House shooter has a history of delusions and run-ins with the law. Last summer, he was arrested for trespassing near the White House. At the FBI's request, his Illinois firearms authorization was revoked, and four weapons--including the AR-15 style rifle used in the shooting--were seized. After the firearms seizure, he was legally prohibited from possessing guns. Authorities in Tazewell County, Illinois, gave the weapons to his father, who police believe later returned them to his son.

Help prevent similar tragedies by filing a witness slip for SB 2387 TODAY before 10 a.m. (Proponent)

Action 2: Tell Rauner to Sign Crosscheck Bill

Indivisible Chicago has been hard at work trying to fight back against voter suppression by ending Illinois’ participation in Crosscheck. Crosscheck is a seriously flawed program that often results in voter disenfranchisement and suppression. Learn more about Crosscheck here.

There is an alternative in ERIC, the Electronic Registration Information Center. ERIC is another voter verification system in which Illinois already participates. ERIC is free of Crosscheck’s security and data-quality flaws. Illinois should continue to use it and encourage surrounding states to do the same.

Last month, SB 2273, the End Crosscheck Bill, passed both the Illinois House and Senate, and the bill is now on Governor Rauner’s desk. This was a great victory for Indivisible, and now we need your help to get this bill to the finish line. Call Governor Rauner today and ask him to sign this bill!

Call Gov. Rauner | Springfield Office 217-782-0244 | Chicago Office 312-814-2121

Script: Hi, my name is {Name} and I’m calling from [Zip Code]. I’m calling to ask Governor Rauner to sign SB 2273, the bill to end Illinois’ participation in the Crosscheck program. The program has numerous security flaws and enables voter suppression. I’m counting on Rauner to stand up for voting rights and sign this bill. Thank you.

Action 3: Pledge to Rally if Trump Impedes Mueller Investigation

As the indictments and guilty pleas continue to add up in the investigations into Trump and his associates, the President is lashing out more and more. It’s looking more likely than ever that he will take steps to impede the Mueller investigation.

Here's what we need you to do to help resist in the event that Trump sets off a constitutional crisis. Indivisible Chicago is planning to be part of a massive, national protest if Mueller is fired. We have over 5000 people signed up to join us at Federal Plaza if necessary.

If you haven't registered yet for the protest, please do so here.

It helps us know how many people to expect. If you haven't given us your cell number so we can text you if something happens, you can update your info here.

And finally, tell a friend. Have them register for the protest. On the day it happens and we get the news that Mueller has been fired, commit to texting 5 friends and telling them to get to Federal Plaza.

This is a big endeavor, and we are working to get a sound system to accommodate thousands of people. If you can chip in a little bit of money to help pay for it, it would be a big help.

The world will be watching our response to this event. We all hope Mueller isn't fired, but if he is we have to be prepared. Will we stand up to authoritarianism? Or will be roll over? I think I know the answer, and I think you do too. See you at Federal Plaza.
