Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: What You Can Do to Save Net Neutrality from a Blue State

In the lead-up to Wednesday’s Senate vote on net neutrality, people have been asking, “How can I help if both of my senators are already supporting the resolution to block the FCC repeal?”

Here are some answers:

First, check to see where your House members stand as well, and call them. If we win in the Senate, we’ll have to get the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution passed in the House as well to restore net neutrality.

Then, do this: There are a handful of senators who are on the fence and the most likely swing votes. But calling them yourself won’t really help unless you live in their state. We need to get as many of their constituents to call as possible. Here’s how:

  1. Contact your friends in these states, and tell them to call their senators using the tool at BattleForTheNet.com/call.

  2. You can use Facebook Graph search to pull up lists of your friends who live in the key states, and then message them one by one. It’s pretty quick if you get into it. Use the list below. You have to be logged in for it to work.

  3. Here’s a quick suggested message: “Hey! The Senate is about to vote on net neutrality and your senator is key. Can you call? This site makes it super easy: https://www.battleforthenet.com/call

 Here’s the list:

Please share this to spread the word. We only have three days to convince these lawmakers to buck partisan politics and side with their constituents. Net neutrality needs all of us!

Action 2: Witness Slips for Training of In-School Police Officers

School should be a safe place where our kids learn and grow—not catch a criminal record. But unfortunately, too many of our nation’s schools serve as pipelines into the criminal justice system, particularly for low-income students and students of color. As the Shriver Center’s recent report, Handcuffs in Hallways, shows, police stationed in Chicago Public Schools operate with little oversight and training, disrupting children’s learning environment, jeopardizing their civil rights, and ultimately leaving them at risk of being swept into the criminal justice system.

If police officers are to be stationed in our schools, they should at least be trained so that schools remain safe for students, teachers, and families. SB 2925—the Safe Students, Trained Officers Bill—would require that all School Resources Officers (or police officers permanently stationed in schools) throughout the State of Illinois undergo formal training—a crucial step towards ensuring that our schools open up opportunities for children, and don’t put them behind bars.

The bill is getting a hearing at 3:30 p.m. TODAY. Sign a witness slip for SB 2925 now!

How to fill out a witness slip:

Action 3: Witness Slips for Environmental Protection

Illinois derives many of its current protections for air, water, wildlife, workers’ rights, and worker safety from federal statutes and regulations, which set minimum standards that states may meet or exceed.

Led by corrupt Scott Pruitt at the EPA, President Trump and Congressional leaders have worked to weaken, repeal, or restrict the implementation of a wide range of environmental, health, and safety laws and regulations. Such federal actions would open the door to lowering the environmental and labor standards that currently protect the people of Illinois.

The Illinois Baseline Protection Act (SB 2213) would preserve Illinois’ current safeguards at this time of great uncertainty at the federal level.

The bill is getting a hearing at 3:30 p.m. TODAY! Sign a witness slip for SB 2213 now (proponent)! See the action above for step-by-step instructions.
