Action 1: Urge Senators to Reject Gina Haspel for CIA

When you promote a torturer,  you promote torture. Gina Haspel personally helped torture detainees in a secret CIA-run prison during the Bush administration. She then made sure the video evidence was destroyed.

Gina Haspel was in charge of a secret “black site” prison in Thailand during the Bush administration that held men who were kidnapped, secretly detained, interrogated and tortured. Beyond waterboarding, detainees were sexually assaulted, beaten, isolated, and starved. They faced mock executions, threats to their families, and psychological experimentation. Haspel was the only person with the authority to stop interrogations at the Thailand site. She never exercised that authority.

The Senate torture report (an executive summary was released in 2014) tells us that the CIA committed crimes that went beyond what they were authorized to do, lied to Congress, the public and the Administration both about the brutality and the effectiveness—and they were never held accountable. Alberto Mora, former chief counsel of the Navy in the Bush administration, argues that there’s nothing else senators need to know about Haspel to make their decisionShe is a torturer and is therefore unfit to lead the CIA.

Torture is illegal in all circumstances, without exception. It was illegal then, and it’s illegal now. Gina Haspel carried out crimes but, instead of punishment, she’s getting a promotion. Unless we stop her. It’s up to the Senate to decide whether to confirm or reject Gina Haspel to lead the CIA. We can #BlockHaspel if Democrats vote together.

Senator Duckworth has spoken out against this nomination. Senator Durbin has not made a public statement against Haspel.

Call Senator Duckworth | DC: 202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506
Call Senator Durbin | DC: 202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952

Senator Duckworth: Hi, my name is {NAME} and I'm a constituent in the {ZIP CODE} and member of Indivisible. I’m calling about Gina Haspel’s nomination as head of the CIA. I want to thank Senator Duckworth for opposing this nomination. Haspel is an unacceptable choice and it’s important for the senator not just to oppose her, but to continue use her platform to increase pressure for other senators. I’ll be looking forward to her statements.

Senator Durbin: Hi, my name is {NAME} and I'm a constituent in the {ZIP CODE} and member of Indivisible. I’m calling about Gina Haspel’s nomination as head of the CIA. I want Senator Durbin to immediately and publicly commit to opposing this nomination. Gina Haspel carried out torture and destroyed the evidence. She is completely unqualified to lead the CIA.  I am very concerned about this nomination and will be checking back to see if the senator has made a public statement.

Action 2: Call On Your State Senator to Protect Healthcare in Illinois

Last week we called on State Representatives. This week we're pushing State Senators to urge the General Assembly to protect consumers from these unregulated health plans that don’t meet ACA standards.

Short-term plans are junk coverage that leaves those who get sick with big bills. This bill, SB2388 SFA1, the Short-term, Limited Duration Health Insurance Coverage Act, will protect consumers and encourage enrollment into comprehensive health insurance by:

  • Defining short-term, limited duration health insurance coverage in statute as individual health insurance;
  • Establishing a maximum coverage period for short-term coverage of 90 days in any given year;
  • Applying all of the consumer health insurance protections that are already included in the Illinois insurance code and state regulation; and
  • Eliminating consumer confusion by requiring clear, plain language disclosures on all sales and marketing materials.

Short-term health plans are the Wild West of insurance in Illinois: between their lack of regulation and questionable marketing practices, they put Illinoisans at long-term risk for poor health and massive debt.

If Illinois lawmakers do not act, pending federal regulations could result in a large expansion of the number of short term plans offered in our state. This would increase the costs and reduce quality of insurance for millions of families, small business owners and employees, and others who purchase individual insurance. Call on your senator to pass SB 2388 SFA1 today.

Script: Hello, my name is ____ and I’m calling from [zip code] with Indivisible. I’m concerned about healthcare in Illinois because of insurance changes at the federal level. SB2388 SFA1 will protect consumers from unregulated short-term, limited duration health plans that put Illinoisans at long-term risk for poor health and massive debt. I urge that you VOTE YES on SB2388 SFA1
