Thursday, April 12 - Mueller Firing Marshals / Oppose Wendy Vitter / Activism Training

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Marshals Needed for Mueller Firing Rapid Response

After the FBI raided his lawyer’s office and home this week, Donald Trump again implied that he is close to firing Robert Mueller or otherwise setting into motion plans to end the Mueller investigation.

Here's what we need you to do to help resist in the event that Trump sets off a constitutional crisis. Indivisible Chicago is planning to be part of a massive, national protest if Mueller is fired. We have over 5000 people signed up to join us at Federal Plaza if necessary. If you haven't registered yet for the protest, please do so here.

But we can’t make this rally happen without volunteer marshals. Marshals help ensure a safe and effective event--no prior experience is necessary. We know that everyone may not be able to attend a last-minute rally, so we’re looking for as many people as possible to sign up, and we’ll contact you on the day of with more information.

We need 100+ marshals for a rally with 5,000+ people. Please sign up to be a volunteer marshal today,

In preparation for the rally, we recommend downloading FireChat, a free messaging app for public and private communications that works even without Internet access or cellular data. Indivisible Chicago will use the channel #IndivisibleChi to make communication easier.

Action 2: Tell Senators to Oppose Judicial Nominee Wendy Vitter

Even before her disastrous hearing yesterday, Wendy Vitter was already Trump's worst judicial nominee so far (amazing but true!) due to her extreme, anti-reproductive health views, her opposition to humanitarian placement of Syrian refugees, AND her attempts to hide her biases from the Senate in order to get confirmed.

There are plenty of other reasons Vitter shouldn't be let anywhere near a federal bench:

• She's shown she doesn't have the judgment needed for the position. She's pushed fake science as fact when it suits her anti-abortion agenda, like championing baseless theories linking abortion and contraception to cancer, infertility, and other health problems.

Vitter has supported unconstitutional abortion restrictions. She praised Texas' efforts to enact medically unnecessary abortion restrictions that were struck down by the Supreme Court as "making great strides in making it very difficult to get abortions."

• Vitter has voiced - contrary to the position of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans who she represents - her opposition to the humanitarian placement of refugee immigrants from Syria in the United States.

• She's untrustworthy. Vitter withheld over 95 pages of documents from the Senate in an apparent effort to disguise her extremist views and political biases, including how she moderated an anti-abortion panel in which she endorsed the idea that women who take contraceptive pills are more likely to die violent deaths, her speeches to Tea Party gatherings from 2010 - 2015, and a speech at a rally against a Planned Parenthood clinic.

This isn't the first time Trump has nominated an unqualified political crony for a judgeship, but even for him, Wendy Vitter is an outrageously inappropriate choice. Wendy Vitter is unfit to serve, period. Speak out against her nomination to the federal bench right now.

Call Senator Duckworth | DC: 202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506
Call Senator Durbin | DC: 202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952

Script: Hi, my name is {NAME} and I'm a constituent in the {ZIP CODE} and member of Indivisible.

I'm calling to ask {PERSON} to oppose the nomination of Wendy Vitter for U.S. District Court in New Orleans. In addition to expressing her extreme, anti-abortion views, she supported unconstitutional abortion restrictions and pushed fake science as fact. Furthermore, Vitter withheld nearly 100 pages of documents from the Senate to hide her extremist views and political biases. This shows she cannot be trusted to be fair and impartial when it comes to issues of reproductive health and rights.

She is an appalling choice for a lifetime judgeship and urge {PERSON} to vigorously and publicly oppose her nomination. Thank you for your time and attention.

Action 3: Activism Training: Birddog and Influence Politics

Indivisible Illinois is hosting a birddog training event! Come join us if you want to learn how to birddog like a champ at election campaign events and fundraisers, as well as learning more about when and how to use civil disobedience tactics. Get plugged in to the national network that is stopping the Trumpsters and winning the future.

“Birddogging” is the activist tactic of putting a policy maker on the spot, in public, and hopefully on camera, with inescapable, bullet proof questions that wins the room. A birddogger may decide to be perceived as a friend or foe, and birddoggers may come in groups small or large. All that is necessary is to pose a question directly to the person who has the power to give us what we’re asking for. This form of simple, direct advocacy, when applied consistently, is amazingly effective--and yet, astonishingly rare. In 2018’s election year, birddogging is how we will win the policies we need.

Please join this training, where experienced organizers from our friends at Housing Works (the nation’s largest community-based AIDS service and activist organization) and the Center for Popular Democracy (a national umbrella of community organizing groups), will share the pro-tips on getting the answers from candidates that we need.

When: Sunday, April 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where:
Loop Church (11 E Adams St #1200)

Action 4: Protest both IL Gov Rauner & WI Gov Walker at the same time!

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and our own Bruce Rauner are two peas in a pod: Two governors who have failed the working families in their respective states. Tonight, Walker will be here to headline a high-dollar fundraiser for Governor Rauner and the Illinois GOP.

Join Indivisible Chicago, Indivisible Illinois, Citizen Action IL, and so many more outside the Chicago Hilton and Towers to protest. Bring homemade signs and raise your voices against this Governor who has broken promises to the people of Illinois and stood in the way of progress.

When: TONIGHT at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Hilton Hotel (720 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60605)
