Friday, March 30 - State Rep: Co-sponsor HB 5531 / Oppose TrumpTax Phase 2

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Tell Your State Rep. to co-sponsor Electorial Reform bill HB 5531

On Tuesday, you signed a Witness Slip for HB 5531 (if you missed it, go ahead and do it now!). The next step is to ask your State Representative to co-sponsor the bill.

The Illinois Senate already voted 31-23 to lessen the influence of big money in Illinois elections by passing Senate Bill 1424. State Rep. Kelly Cassidy has submitted the companion bill, HB 5531 for campaign contribution matching. This fund matching will blunt the impact of special interests in our elected officials and allow more people be able to run for office. This legislation is championed by multiple good government groups like Fair Elections Illinois, Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, and Illinois Public Interest Research Group. The bills would create a small donor matching system, wherein candidates would be eligible to receive public matching funds for small contributions by voluntarily agreeing to forgo big money and corporate contributions

Script: Hi, my name is {NAME} and I’m a constituent at {ZIP CODE} and member of Indivisible Chicago.

I'm calling to ask {PERSON} to co-sponsor bill HB 5531, which sets up a small donor matching system allowing candidates to receive public matching funds to run for office. This will curtail the influence of big money, corporations, and special interests in our government.

We deserve that our public representatives be free of financial conflicts of interest that may influence the policies and agenda of our state, and this bill helps get us there.

Thank You for taking my call.

Action 2: Tell your members of congress to Oppose TrumpTax Phase 2

In case you missed it, last week, Trump and his Republican lackeys in Congress announced their plot to pass “Phase Two” of the TrumpTax… as early as April 15th.
Since the TrumpTax is already giving massive tax cuts to corporations and the rich, adding $1.5 trillion to our national debt, and ripping lifesaving health care away from 13 million Americans, my first thought was, “What else could they possibly take from us?”
Well. First, they want to make tax cuts for the 1% permanent -- which is bad enough. But even that’s just a smokescreen for their real objective: slashing the capital gains taxes Wall Street bankers have to pay when they sell investments. And they want to pay for this by making even deeper cuts to the services hardworking Americans depend upon.
Republicans have been itching to cut capital gains taxes for decades. They know how happy it would make their Wall Street donors, and they’re willing to add billions more to the national debt to do it. They must think we’re not paying attention. It’s time to let them know how wrong they are. Take a couple of moments to contact your representatives right now and tell them you won’t stand for EVEN MORE tax giveaways to the rich.

Script: All Republicans representatives in Illinois voted for the TrumpTax, if you have a republican rep, adjust the script accordingly!

Hi, my name is {NAME} and I’m a constituent at {ZIP CODE} and member of Indivisible Chicago.

Despite overwhelming objections from voters like me, and the votes of {PERSON}, Congressional Republicans passed the GOP's tax scam bill, giving massive tax cuts to the rich and wealthy corporations, while raising health care premiums, and threatening Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Now, I understand that Republican leaders are saying they want to make those cuts for the 1% permanent, cut the capital gains tax, and pay for it by cutting services for the rest of us. Please do what's right for your constituents and loudly oppose giving even one penny more in tax cuts to the rich.

Thank you for your time and attention.
