Wednesday, March 28 - Oppose Gina Haspel for CIA Director / Witness Slips for Jail Voting / Tax March on April 14

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Tell Senator Durbin to Oppose Gina Haspel for CIA Director

On March 13th, Trump announced Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s firing via Twitter, replacing him with the current CIA Director, Mike Pompeo. Trump plans to fill the vacancy left by Pompeo with the current Deputy Director of the CIA, Gina Haspel.

While Haspel is a career CIA intelligence officer who has spent most of her 30+ year career undercover, she has faced sharp criticism for her key role in a CIA torture program and its subsequent cover-up. In 2002, she ran a secret “black site” CIA prison in Thailand that played an important role in the Bush administration’s illegal torture program. It is known that waterboarding and other brutal methods of torture were conducted under her watch at the secret site. In 2005, Haspel’s name appeared on a document giving instructions to destroy video evidence of the brutal interrogations in an attempt to cover up the abuse.

Two Democratic senators, including our own Tammy Duckworth and Oregon’s Ron Wyden, have already signaled they will not support Haspel for CIA Director, and Republicans Susan Collins (ME) and John McCain (AZ) have cautioned they have reservations about her promotion. Haspel’s history makes her a poor choice for CIA Director, and Congress should demand a more ethical pick to run America’s premier intelligence agency.

Call Senator Durbin and tell him to join Senator Duckworth in opposing Haspel’s nomination.

Script: Hello, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from {ZIP CODE} and member of Indivisible Chicago. I am calling to ask {PERSON} to oppose Gina Haspel for CIA Director. Ms. Haspal’s history running a black-ops site in Thailand and overseeing the use of torture makes her unqualified to run the CIA. I expect a more ethical and principled person for this position. Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.

Action 2: Sign a witness slip to support establishing voting rights in Illinois jails.

Last month, Illinois State Representative Juliana Stratton announced the introduction of HB 4469, a bill designed to expand voter access and education efforts in Illinois jails. This bill was supported by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois and the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law.

Currently, Illinois’ laws for voting in jail are ambiguous and the ability of incarcerated people to vote varies widely between jails across our state. Many of the 20,000 people who are being detained before their trials do not have access to vote. Of the almost 4 million people who have a past felony conviction in the state, many do not know that they are eligible to vote.

HB 4469 would direct county jails and election officials to establish a process that allows detainees awaiting trial to cast their ballots during elections. Additionally, counties with a population over 3 million would be able to establish a temporary polling place in county jails. HB 4469 would also direct county jails to provide a voter registration application to any person in custody eligible to vote. For those being released (including parole and probation), they would be notified that that their voting rights have been restored and provided with an updated registration form.

This bill is collecting witness slips now.
