Action 1: Demand Hearings on the McCabe Firing

On the night of March 16th, less than 48 hours before he planned to retire, FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was fired. The last minute termination stripped McCabe of the pension he earned in 22 years of service to our country, and followed months of character assassination from right wing media and the President himself. The ostensible justification was a recommendation from the agency's own internal Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), which found McCabe improperly communicated information to the press and then misled OPR about that communication.

Undermining this narrative are the following facts: McCabe is a corroborating witness for James Comey regarding Trump's strongarm "loyalty" conversations and similarly partisan remarks made by Trump to McCabe himself; McCabe earned Trump's wrath because of his role in investigations connected to Hillary Clinton and the 2016 election; McCabe was fired by an Attorney General who is supposed to be recused from matters related to Comey, Clinton and the 2016 election. This all suggests McCabe's firing is no more about Hillary Clinton than was Comey's.

In both cases, decent men who'd dedicated their lives to serving the country and seeking the truth were attacked and taken out by a corrupt president and his henchmen. This is not democracy. This is not due process. This is not justice. Call your representatives and demand that the FBI Deputy Director be allowed to retire with the pension and dignity he deserves, that this latest outrage be investigated by Congress, and that Attorney General Jeff Sessions testify.

Action 2: Witness Slip for Electoral Reform

Last year, the Illinois Senate voted 31-23 to lessen the influence of big money in Illinois elections by passing Senate Bill 1424. The legislation, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Daniel Biss and championed by good government groups Fair Elections Illinois, Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, and Illinois Public Interest Research Group, would create a small donor matching system, wherein candidates would be eligible to receive public matching funds for small contributions by voluntarily agreeing to forgo big money and corporate contributions. A similar system has existed in New York City for decades and has been adopted by other jurisdictions in recent years.

This year, State Rep. Kelly Cassidy has submitted HB 5531 for campaign contribution matching. This fund matching will blunt the impact of special interests in our elected officials and allow more people be able to run for office. The bill is collecting witness slips now.
