Thursday, February 8 - Canvass for Marie Newman / Tell the House: No on HR 620 / Indivisible Chicago Summit

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Canvass and Phone Bank for Marie Newman on Saturday

Marie Newman is the true progressive running in the IL-3 district race. She supports women's rights, immigrant rights, and LGBTQ rights, all areas where Dan Lipinski can't be bothered to represent his constituents.

Marie Newman is the right choice for the IL-3. She wins on message and when voters are educated about who she is. But, Lipinski has gigantic name recognition. Without boots on the ground from volunteers and phone calling, she will come up short against this conservative.

It's essential that Indivisible Chicago members from all over the city come out to support Marie Newman and help get her message out.

Join us on Saturday, February 10 at 10 a.m. at the campaign office at 5444 S Archer Avenue. The campaign will have scripts, talking points, turfs, and a training. Folks who can't walk but still want to help can do phone banking from the office. If you wish to phone bank, please bring a laptop for calls or data entry. For those that are walking, please make sure to wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather (in other words, dress for the cold). Get more info and RSVP here.

Action 2: Tell the House to Vote No on HR 620

This month, the attack on the Americans with Disabilities Act is heating up. HR 620 was introduced in Congress as a way to stop ADA "drive-by" lawsuits, which have been heavily abused by profit seekers in states like Florida and California.

However, HR 620 does nothing to stop the legal abuse, but it does make it harder for individual people with disabilities to advocate for access in places of public business, thus essentially resulting in an attack on the ADA. HR 620 may advance to the House floor this month for a vote. Help advocate with your U.S. House Representative to stop this bill, which attacks our rights while failing to protect against abuse of the ADA

Script: Hello, my name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [zip code]. As a concerned disability advocate, I believe that H.R. 620, the ADA Notification Act, is a significant limitation on the rights of people with disabilities. What this bill will do is remove all obligation for business to become accessible unless and until the business receives a relatively complex notice from an individual denied access. The ADA originally asked business owners to proactively make their facilities accessible. H.R. 620 now shifts that obligation on to the individuals with disabilities. A civil rights statute has never previously placed the burden on the party denied their civil rights. Please oppose HR 620!

Action 3: Prep for the Indivisible Chicago Summit on 3/11

On March 11, 1,500 Indivisible Chicago members and grassroots organizers will gather under one roof to learn from some of the most influential progressives in the country, including the founders of the Indivisible movement, as well as local resistance leaders.

Free for all attendees, our first Citywide Summit will strengthen the connection between our 20+ local chapters and partner organizations including Swing Left, Let America Vote, Chicago Votes, Voto Latino, and more. We’re looking to recharge and refocus our efforts on this year’s elections to ensure progressives take back the Governorship, the House, and the Senate.

Claim your free ticket to the Summit on Sunday, March 11 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Malcolm X College (1900 W Jackson).

Our vision is big, but we can’t reach the Summit without you. We are 100% grassroots-funded and are counting on donations to cover the costs of the venue, sign language interpreters, insurance, and food for this free event. Please consider donating to help us get Chicago fired up to Resist in 2018!
