Friday, February 23 - Oppose Howard Nielson Jr. for Judgeship / Phone Bank for Marie Newman / Early Voting

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Oppose Howard Nielson Jr. for Judgeship

Donald Trump has nominated Howard Nielson Jr. for a lifetime judgeship on the United States District Court for the District of Utah. Nielson is yet another extremist judiciary appointee with a longstanding history of bigotry. For example, Nielson argued that Judge Vaughn Walker, who ruled that California’s Proposition 8 banning gay marriage was unconstitutional, was unable to rule fairly on the case because Judge Walker is gay.

Nielson has not only attacked LGTBQ+ people’s rights but also advocated for the use of torture. He defended Stephen Bradbury's “torture memos”, which the Bush administration used to justify torturing detainees suspected of terrorism using methods like waterboarding. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has referred to these memos as “permission slips for torture” that violate the Geneva Conventions.

Tell our Seantors that Nielson’s disdain for the LGBTQ+ community and his defense of the indefensible make him an outrageous choice for a lifetime judgeship appointment.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME]. I’m calling from [zip code], and I’m a member of Indivisible Chicago. I'm calling to ask {PERSON} to oppose the nomination of Howard Nielson Jr. for a federal judgeship in Utah. In addition to advocating for torture, Nielson has actively worked against LGBTQ+ people's rights. He is an appalling choice for a lifetime judgeship.

Action 2: Phone Bank for Marie Newman

Marie Newman is the true progressive running in the IL-3 district race. She supports women's rights, immigrant rights, and LGBTQ rights, all areas where Dan Lipinski can't be bothered to represent his constituents.

Marie Newman is the right choice for the IL-3. She wins on message and when voters are educated about who she is. But, Lipinski has gigantic name recognition. Without boots on the ground from volunteers and phone calling, she will come up short against this conservative.

It's essential that Indivisible Chicago members from all over the city come out to support Marie Newman and help get her message out. Help HRC Chicago get the word out with weekly phone bank sessions around the city:

Action 3: Early Voting for the Illinois Primary

Did you know that less than 18% of Chicagoans who were registered to vote actually did in the last non-presidential primary? There are a lot of things we do really well in Chicago, but turning out to vote isn’t one of them. The next non-presidential primary is coming up on March 20, and early voting started on February 21st. Voting and civic engagement is vital for a healthy democracy.

The state races are important on issues like funding schools and social services. Cook County races are important on issues like taxation, jail reform, and healthcare services. Cast your vote early:

  1. Check if you are registered already. Not registered to vote? No problem. Illinois offers same day registration at all of our early voting locations. Just bring 2 forms of ID. You can also register online, but you still need to bring that ID when you cast that first vote.
  2. Find your ballot at
  3. Register to vote by mail, or pick an early voting place and go vote! (Early voting in suburban Cook County starts March 5)
  4. Get 10 friends to do the same!
