Action 1: Call on Senators to Vote No on H.R. 620

Because going after Americans’ healthcare wasn’t enough, the GOP has added another atrocity to their agenda: rewriting the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to place additional burdens on people with disabilities. Last week, the House has voted to pass H.R. 620, which eliminates the ADA requirement that businesses be “proactive” in making their facilities accessible.

As the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) summarizes, “H.R. 620 would completely change the way in which a business is required to comply with the ADA. Instead of requiring that a business comply proactively, the bill would place the burden on the individual who is being denied access. This bill proposes that after an individual with a disability is denied access she must first notify the business owner, with exacting specificity, that her civil rights were violated, and then wait for six months to see if the business will make ‘substantial progress’ toward access, before going to a court to order compliance.”

This bill places an unfair burden on individuals with disabilities, completely undermining the goal of the ADA. As the bill moves to the Senate, call on our Senators to do the right thing and vote no.

Call Senator Duckworth | DC: 202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506
Call Senator Durbin | DC: 202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952

Script: Hi, my name is [name] and I’m calling from [zip code] with Indivisible Chicago. I’m calling to ask [Senator] to oppose H.R. 620, the "ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017." Many proponents claim that this bill protects people with disabilities, but it only makes it harder for them to exercise their rights in advocating with places of public business when they are not accessible. In fact, the bill would make it EASIER for businesses to keep breaking the ADA laws while taking away the civil rights of people with disabilities.

Action 2: Community Meeting on Gun Violence Saturday

We know that Chicago has had enough of gun violence, and we’re ready to start talking solutions.

Join State Rep. Ann Williams, Colleen Daley of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, and NIU school shooting survivor Patrick Korellis for a community meeting on how we can respond to gun violence throughout the nation. This informal meeting will address pending gun violence prevention legislation in Springfield and statewide advocacy efforts, and will be a space for community members to share concerns and ask questions.

When: Saturday, February 24 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Where: Chicago Public Library - Lincoln Belmont Branch (1659 W Melrose St.)

Action 3: Swing Left Fundraiser on Sunday

You’re invited to join Swing Left’s effort to flip the House in 2018! In case you haven’t heard, Swing Left is a grassroots community working towards flipping the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterm election and stopping the Trump/GOP agenda.

Swing Left Chicago is hosting a fundraiser to flip our closest swing district, the Illinois 6th. The district is currently represented by Republican Peter Roskam. Why Roskam? He has voted with Trump 97% of the time. Most recently, he helped create and voted for the tax bill. He does not support federal funds for healthcare. He supports the Muslim travel ban, is staunchly anti-choice and anti-marriage equality. He has even called climate change "junk science." Fundraising proceeds will support Roskam’s Democratic challenger (to be determined by the March primary) in the 2018 midterm election.

Join us for a drink and to learn about the 6th district from Reid McCollum of the Coalition for a Better Illinois 6th. We’ll also have a silent auction and you can sign up to get involved!

When: Sunday, February 25 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Green Eye Lounge (2403 West Homer Street)
