Wednesday, February 14 - Demand a Clean Dream Act / Send Support to Immigrants / Support Gun Dealer Licensing

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Call Your MoCs and Demand a Clean Dream Act

The Senate is turning its attention to immigration for the first time since it passed a bipartisan comprehensive immigration bill back in 2013. That bill never made it to President Obama’s desk after Republican hardliners in the House blocked it, despite widespread public support for it. The last time Congress attempted to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill, the Senate was controlled by Democrats.  That won’t be the case this time around. With Republicans in control of both chambers, and with a white supremacist in the White House egging on the most extreme among them, an open debate on immigration on the Senate floor could turn ugly quickly.

We’re in this mess because Donald Trump unnecessarily ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program back in September 2017. As a result, the lives of 800,000 DACA recipients are now in grave risk. 122 DACA recipients are losing their protections every single day, and starting March 5, that number will jump to 1,200 a day.

We want a “clean” Dream Act, which provides relief for Dreamers but that does not further fund or expand Trump’s deportation machine. Short of the Dream Act, we need Democrats to push for as limited a bill as possible. It must include relief for Dreamers, but should not include the harmful, nativist provisions that the White House has proposed.

It’s possible that we could get a breakthrough in Congress, especially as we approach the arbitrary March 5 deadline. We need pressure our Members of Congress to make sure we get a DACA fix that is consistent with our values and that doesn’t require Dreamers to sacrifice their parents in the process.

Script:  Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a Chicago constituent from [zip code] and member of Indivisible. I’m calling today to ask {PERSON} to support a clean DREAM Act and reject Trump’s demands to include massive, unnecessary spending on border security to the bill.

Dreamers are not a bargaining chip to be used to advance Trump's racist policies. Every Congressional leader AND Trump himself say they support keeping Dreamers in America because it's the only home they've ever known; Congress must keep the promise that we made to Dreamers when DACA was first started. I ask that {PERSON} vote to permanently protect them from deportation and oppose the family ban, more ICE agents, and the border wall. Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.

Action 2: To Immigrants with Love

With white supremacists in the White House and hateful voices being emboldened across the country, it’s a trying time for immigrants in America today. But for every bigot, there are thousands more people who know that this country was built by immigrants and who believe that this country is better off for all their contributions.

This Valentine’s Day, show your support for immigrants and DACA recipients by participating in the To Immigrants with Love project. Send a message to let immigrants know that they are welcome and appreciated in this country.

Action 3: Tell State Reps to Support Gun Dealer Licensing

The Illinois House will soon be voting on a bill that would help reduce gun crime in Illinois. Senate Bill 1657, Gun Dealer Licensing, would require employees of gun shops to undergo background checks, allow law enforcement to inspect gun shops, and require video security for gun shops to prevent theft. This bill would stem the flow of illegal guns in our state. Illinois NEEDS statewide gun dealer licensing.

Find your state House Representative and call to tell them to vote “yes” on SB 1657.

Script: Hi, my name is _____ and my zip code is _____.  I'm calling to urge Representative ______ to vote YES on SB1657. This Act will help reduce gun crime in Illinois. Illinois needs statewide gun dealer licensing. Thank you.
