Action 1: Tell Your Rep to Sign on to the Green New Deal Before 12/13

The 2018 midterms swept Democrats into power in the House, and they have brought with them a renewed focus on combating climate change. Sitting Members of Congress (MoCs) and incoming MoCs alike have rallied around a proposal to establish a Select Committee For A Green New Deal as a starting point for making the changes necessary to protect the planet from catastrophic climate change. The Select Committee would be responsible for developing a plan and accompanying draft legislation by March 2020 for a Green New Deal that would be implemented over the next decade.

The Green New Deal is an ambitious, progressive policy framework that would protect the planet and grow the economy. Like the original New Deal, the Green New Deal represents a massive investment in America’s people and infrastructure—but with the additional goals of spending on projects that will transition America to a green economy, and ensuring that these investments are targeted to promote “social, economic, racial, regional, and gender-based justice and equality.” Get more details about the Green New Deal.

Our pressure is working. Rep. Mike Quigley now supports the bill. Several Illinois MoC are likely to support the bill next. If you’re a consistent of the following MoC, call them today!

  • Chuy Garcia (if Luis Gutierrez is your current MoC): 773-376-3850

  • Jan Schakowsky: 773-506-7100

  • Danny Davis: 773-533-7520

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code] and a member of Indivisible. I’m calling to ask [REP] to publicly support establishing a Select Committee For A Green New Deal in the House Rules for the 116th Congress. Establishing a Select Committee For A Green New Deal would demonstrate that Democrats understand the kind of action we need to take to prevent catastrophic levels of global warming. Thank you.

Action 2: Ask Senators to Support the American Family Act

What if there was a bill that could cut child poverty in the United States by 45 percent? The American Family Act, currently proposed in the Senate, would do just that. The bill would ensure that all but the richest families received at least $3,000 per child, no strings attached.

Vox explains how the bill differs from current tax credits: “Currently, only $1,400 per child of the child tax credit is refundable, and thus available to the poorest Americans who don’t owe income taxes. Even then, you have to earn nearly $12,000 to get the full refundable credit; poorer people get less, because the credit is limited to 15 percent of your earned income over $2,500. It’s a messy, complicated system that leaves out the very poorest.” This bill would make sure the poorest Americans received this assistance.

Similar concepts work in other countries, and, according to Vox, “a child allowance can be an integral part of a Green New Deal, by offsetting the increased cost of fossil fuel energy that’s an inevitable part of any real plan to fight climate change.”

Currently, the only supporters of the bill are Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH). Call on our Senators to sign on as well!

I’m calling to ask Senator [NAME] to support the American Family Act, which would ensure all but the richest American receive a substantial tax credit for each child. Experts at Columbia University estimate that this could cut child poverty by 45%. This is an important bill that could make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans, and I urge the Senator to support it. Thank you.
