Action 1: URGENT - Call on Reps to Protect IL Education
The veto session means that our state representatives can override Governor Rauner’s vetos on important bills, including two education bills that are coming up for a vote by the end of this week!
This week, the House overrode the Governor’s veto on HB5175, the charter commission bill, and now it’s time to get it through in the Senate! We don’t think an appointed state commission should make local control decisions about where new charters are needed. The commission was set up to grant appeals to charters that are rejected by local school boards.
House Bill 5481 aims to shed light on data related to class sizes and teacher caseloads in Illinois while setting class size goals that give students their best chance at succeeding inside and outside of the classroom. Call on your House rep to vote yes!
Script: Hi. My name is _____ and I’m a constituent from [ZIP CODE]. I’m calling to ask [SENATOR/REP] to pass [HB 5175 for Senate/HB5481 for Reps] in the veto session when its called for an override. Thank you.
Action 2: TOMORROW - Postcards for GA Runoff Election
Election season isn’t over yet! We’re reassembling the Postcard Posse for an important runoff election in pro-Trump Georgia.
Former U.S. Rep. John Barrow (D) and state Rep. Brad Raffensperger (R) advanced to a runoff following the November 6 general election to replace incumbent Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R), who ran for governor.
We saw first hand the importance of Georgia’s Secretary of State when Brian Kemp worked to actively disenfranchise voters, leading to Kemp’s winning the governorship. Let’s help bring a Democrat to the position of SoS and restore voting rights in Georgia by writing postcards to voters.
When: Tuesday, November 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Gideon Welles (4500 N Lincoln Ave)
RSVP and and share on Facebook
Action 3: Protect Immigrant Rights to Legal Benefits
The Trump administration has officially proposed a new regulation that would block immigrant families from having a permanent, secure future in the United States. Under the new regulation, immigrants who legally access to basic health supports, safe housing, and healthy food programs could be denied admission to the country or refused a green card. The proposed rule also makes clear that earning low wages, having children, or dealing with a medical condition could be held against immigrants seeking a permanent future in the United States.
This is the latest inhumane attack on the health and wellbeing of so many families and communities across the country. But together, we can stop this.
Under federal law, the Trump administration is required to read and respond to every unique comment before it can finalize its harmful regulation.
