Monday, November 12 - Voting in Jails / Gender-Inclusive Language / Indivisible Chicago Podcast / Georgia & Florida vote counts

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Help Pass Legislation to Support Voting in Jails

Did you know that, in Illinois, detainees awaiting trial are not guaranteed the right to vote while they’re in jail? It’s true. Depending which county they are in, detained citizens are denied access to a ballot. Many people remain in jail before their trials because they are not able to afford jail--this does not mean they are guilty of a crime. People who make bail are not denied the right to vote--why should pretrial detainees be treated differently?

HB 4469 aims to change that. Passed by the Illinois House and Senate and then vetoed by Governor Rauner, HB 4469 still has a chance to pass during the veto session.

Here’s how you can help pass HB 4469:

Script: Hello, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent calling from [ZIP CODE]. I am reaching out to discuss Senator Aquino and Representative Stratton’s bill, which requires county jails and election authorities to collaborate in creating a process that ensures eligible pre-trial detainees can cast their ballot during elections. 28,382 constituents agree people who are eligible to vote, who are not convicted, should have the opportunity to vote. The bill passed with bipartisan support, but HB 4469 was vetoed by Governor Rauner.  Will you commit to voting yes when the bill is called during veto session? Thank you.

Action 2: Support Gender Inclusive Language in Election Code

With Trump’s continued denigration of women and trans rights, it’s important to support gender inclusivity wherever we can. SB 2854 amends the Election Code to change references from "committeeman" to "committeeperson" and makes related changes throughout the Code.

You can sign a witness slip to support this bill here (proponent).

Witness Slip Instructions:

I. IDENTIFICATION: with your information. In the Firm/Business or Agency Box and in the Title Box, identify as "Self."

II. REPRESENTATION: as "Self" (unless you actually are representing an organization)

III. POSITION: select "Proponent"

IV. TESTIMONY: select "Record of Appearance Only"

Action 3: Listen to the Indivisible Chicago Podcast

Every Sunday, Indivisible Chicago members Tom Moss releases a new episode of the Indivisible Chicago Podcast (ICP). It’s a great way to keep up with the latest news about the Indivisible movement on a local level and to stay plugged in to upcoming efforts around the city.

After another rollercoaster week, the Democrats are up, Sessions is down, and no one knows what happens next.

This week’s interview: What’s at the root of the urge among some toward a demagogue? What happens when America begins to confront the illusion of the American Dream? And where do we go from here? Allan Scholom is a psychotherapist who has thought and written extensively on the connection of politics to psychoanalysis, and he joins the podcast this week to discuss mental health in the age of Trump.

Action 4: Make sure every vote counts in Georgia and Florida!

Even though the election ended Tuesday, votes in key races across the country are still being counted. And the races for Florida Senate, Florida Governor, and Georgia Governor aren’t over yet.

Trump and his administration are working double-time to silence crucial votes, and we can’t let that happen now, or ever. We need to be sure that all ballots that were cast, including all vote-by-mail and provisional ballots, are counted. And volunteers are needed ASAP in these efforts.

Here’s how you can help.

It only takes a few minutes to sign up to make a difference in these crucial elections. No matter where you live, you can sign up to volunteer for Georgia ballot counts. Here’s the info:

We need all hands on deck to make sure every vote is counted in these crucial races. So if you can, please sign up to volunteer. And forward this email to friends and family who may be able to volunteer in the coming days!

Together, we’ll make sure #EveryVoteCounts!
