Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Tell Senators to Oppose Eric Murphy

On October 10, the Senate Judiciary committee considered the nomination of yet another Federalist society member for a lifetime appointment to a circuit court. In this case, anti-civil rights attorney Eric Murphy has been nominated to the 6th Circuit Court. As State Solicitor for Ohio, Murphy has repeatedly argued for limiting or removing the rights of Ohioans in favor of advancing a right wing agenda of voter suppression, gay rights opposition and denying women the right to choose.

Murphy successfully defended Ohio’s voter purge laws before the Supreme Court, which disproportionately disenfranchised people of color, the poor, veterans and the disabled. He also helped to end early voting and defended Ohio’s discriminatory voter ID law. Murphy defended Ohio’s ban on same-sex marriage before the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges, calling marriage equality ”disruptive” to our constitutional democracy. And when Ohio sought to defund Planned Parenthood by prohibiting the state from contracting with abortion providers, who also provide basic women’s health services, Murphy defended the state’s position. As a conservative legal activist, Murphy submitted an amicus brief in the Hobby Lobby case supporting a corporation’s right to deny contraception coverage. In his private practice, he defended the tobacco industry from lung cancer victims and pharmaceutical companies when the engaged in dubious business practices.

Demand that Senator vote no on Eric Murphy.

Call Senator Duckworth | DC: 202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506
Call Senator Durbin | DC: 202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a member of Indivisible Chicago calling from [ZIP CODE]. I'm calling to urge Senator [NAME] to reject Eric Murphy's nomination to the 6th Circuit Court. Murphy's extreme positions on issues from access to voting, birth control, and marriage equality makes it clear that he opposes civil rights in every form, and defends the rights of special interests. Thank you for your time and attention.

Action 2: Tell Greyhound to Stop Cooperating with Border Patrol

"Greyhound will always welcome Border Patrol here." That's what a Greyhound employee told activists at a bus station in Washington state, where immigration enforcement was conducting warrantless searches and arrests of passengers.

What's worse: Greyhound is choosing not to listen to ACLU lawyers after they repeatedly met with company executives to make clear that Greyhound has the right to deny Border Patrol entry on their buses when agents don't have a warrant or probable cause.

This is still happening: Across the country, Border Patrol agents are boarding Greyhound buses in search of noncitizens to accost, round up, and deport. Agents interrogate and detain passengers based on nothing more than the color of their skin or the sound of their voice.

Greyhound should refuse Border Patrol searches to protect its passengers, like the 12-year-old arrested on a bus in Miami or the father and his DACA-recipient son questioned as they rode from Seattle to Montana.

Soon, the ACLU will deliver this petition to the Greyhound headquarters, and we need your help so that they finally get the message.

Action 3: Get the Word Out About Kwame Raoul for AG

There is a lot of anger and frustration about Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. We hear it and we feel it throughout our membership. Being grassroots activists, we love seeing this anger and frustration channeled toward the November 6 election. Channeling anger and frustration toward positive electoral change is why this group was founded. Following Kavanaugh’s confirmation, there is a race which we must ensure we win: Illinois Attorney General.

We know what is threatened by the Trump Administration and the Kavanaugh Supreme Court. They will come after the ACA, LGBTQ Rights, immigrants rights, voting rights, and workers’ rights. The first line of defense against these attacks is our Illinois Attorney General. Luckily, there is a candidate who shares our values.

State Senator Kwame Raoul spent his career fighting for the same values we marched for over the past 2 years. We can count on Kwame Raoul to stand up the the Trump Administration and the Kavanaugh Supreme Court. Keep turning your anger to action: volunteer, donate, and vote Kwame.

Let everyone know why they should vote Kwame by sharing this infographic on Facebook.
