Action 1: Call on Senators to Save TPS

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a time-limited immigration status that allows foreign nationals from select countries to remain in the US rather than be sent back into dangerous circumstances, such as war or natural disaster. Since November, Trump’s administration has denied TPS renewal to hundreds of thousands of individuals from Nicaragua, Haiti, and now El Salvador. These people are unable to obtain legal permanent residency in the US before their TPS expires.

The SECURE Act
was introduced to allow qualified TPS recipients to apply for lawful permanent residence status. Currently, it is very difficult for individuals with TPS to apply for permanent residence (i.e. a green card). Many individuals with TPS have lived, worked, and paid taxes in the US for years or even decades without a clear path to residency. The SECURE Act would allow qualified TPS recipients to apply for permanent residence, which would in turn allow these valued members of our community to remain in the US without the constant threat of potential deportation.

Call Senator Duckworth | DC:  202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506
Call Senator Durbin | DC:  202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952

Script: Hello, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [zip code]. I’m calling today to demand that Senator [NAME] vocally support and vote in favor of the SECURE Act, S.2144. Providing TPS recipients a path to legal permanent residency is the right choice both morally and economically. These valued members of our communities deserve the right to a path to citizenship. Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.

Action 2: Call on House to Block Expansion of Trump Administration Spying

What if Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump had a massive database that held your text messages, emails, video chats and instant messages? What if they could search through that database at any time without a warrant, and use what they find against you for just about any reason?

Given this administration’s well-known racist, bigoted and authoritarian tendencies, you might be especially concerned in this scenario if you’re a person of color, an activist, or someone else Trump and his administration have threatened.

Unfortunately for us all, this scenario isn’t a hypothetical—it’s a reality. The Trump administration inherited massive surveillance authority that allows the government to sweep up Americans’ communications and sift through it without a warrant. The U.S. government already has a shameful history of particularly targeting activists and marginalized communities, and the FBI’s recent report framing so-called “black identity extremists” as potential terror threats only raises fears of targeting.

The good news is that a key part of this authority is set to expire soon, unless Congress extends it.

Every Member of Congress is going to have to decide whether to protect Americans’ privacy, and shield vulnerable communities from unconstitutional targeting, or to leave unconstitutional spying authority in Trump’s — and Jeff Sessions’ — hands.

Script:  Hi! My name is [name] and I’m a constituent calling from [zip code]. I’m calling because I’m concerned about Trump’s wide-ranging surveillance authority, and I want to urge Representative [name] not to reauthorize Section 702 of the FISA Amendments without closing the “backdoor search” loophole. In support of this reform,Representative should cosponsor the bipartisan USA RIGHTS Act from Representatives Lofgren and Poe. At a minimum, Congress should close the so-called “backdoor search” loophole which allows the FBI to search through collected data for Americans’ communications without a warrant. Thank you.

Action 3: Phone Bank for the Dream Act This Week

We have TWO WEEKS left to pass the Dream Act, and Congress must act now.

It is urgent that we organize and mobilize our community; including students, parents, teachers, and allies to phone bank for DACA recipients. Our representatives need to hear our loud and clear message that they are here to stay and that we need a clean Dream Act to pass NOW!

Join us for three sessions of phone banking to call registered voters and urge them to contact their representatives about the Dream Act!
