Action 1: TONIGHT - Attend Expert Discussion on Refugees and National Security TOMORROW

Indivisible Pilsen, in collaboration with Welcoming the Stranger and Loop Church, is sponsoring an expert panel discussion on America’s refugee policy, which is undergoing major changes under the Trump administration. The expert-led discussion will focus on the proposed reduction in overall admissions, the program funding levels, and how that impacts our national security, economy, and other areas. This is a chance to learn about the current global refugee situation, the admissions process, the implications of current policy, and what you can do to make your voice heard.

RSVP to attend the event TONIGHT at Loop Church (11th E Adams St, 12 floor) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Action 2: Demand that Rauner Sign HB40

HB-40 removes the Illinois abortion trigger law that would remove a woman's right to choose should Roe v. Wade be overturned in the Supreme Court. The bill is on Governor Rauner’s desk right now, and he has not decided whether he will veto or sign the law. Stand with women across Illinois and demand that Rauner sign HB-40.

Call Rauner today: Springfield: (217) 782-0244 | Chicago: (312) 814-2121

Script: Hello, I'm calling as an Illinois resident in [city] and zip code [zip code] to urge Governor Rauner to commit to signing and passing HB-40. This legislation will protect women's rights here in Illinois, and it is essential to ensuring that we do not take a step backward as a state should the country do otherwise. Thank you.

Action 3: Call on Reps to Pass Jones Act Suspension for Puerto Rico

The crisis continues in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and neither Trump nor Congress has made significant moves to deliver the aid that is desperately needed on the island. Luckily, Chicago’s own Luis Gutierrez is cosponsoring a bill in Congress with Nydia Velázquez (D-NY)  called “Request Jones Act Suspension, Exemption from FEMA Matching Funds."

As Twitter user @radicalamy states: Why is this request so important? FEMA requires matching funds from state and local government: funds that Puerto Rico just doesn't have. This request would temporarily suspend FEMA's matching funds requirement. The aid request also temporarily suspends the Jones Act, which says that only ships that originate in US mainland can dock in Puerto Rico.

Right now, it is ILLEGAL for ANY other country to send aid directly to Puerto Rico (The Jones Act is obviously abhorrent and should be repealed). The suspension would allow ships with supplies and aid workers from other countries to bring relief to Puerto Rico. This is so important.

Ask your congressperson's office to commit to getting in touch with Rep. Velázquez's office about the aid request.

Find your House rep’s contact info - IMPORTANT: If you live in Gutierrez’s district, please call to THANK him for supporting this bill!

Script (if your Rep is NOT Gutierrez): My name is _____. I live in zip code ______, and am a member of Indivisible Chicago. I'm calling on [MoC name] to get in touch with Rep. Velázquez's office about the bill entitled ““Request Jones Act Suspension, Exemption from FEMA Matching Funds." It is vital that [MoC Name] supports this bill and work to pass it  immediately to get aid to the American citizens in Puerto Rico and prevent a humanitarian crises. Please coordinate with Velazquez's office on signing her letters to FEMA and DHS. Thank you.
