Action 1: MONDAY - Rally to End Money Bail in Chicago

Every day, thousands of people sit in the Cook County Jail even though they have not yet been convicted of a crime simply because they are too poor to afford bail. The vast majority are people of color. This system is racist and unjust and is not keeping our communities safe.

This Monday, this system is set to change. Cook County Chief Judge Tim Evans has created a new policy that requires judges to set bail amounts within the confines of what defendants can afford to pay. If properly implemented, this will mean that nobody will be locked up simply because they are poor. But we know that if we don’t continue to push, this could fail in the implementation phase and this huge victory could slip through the cracks.

In order to push this over the finish line, The People’s Lobby and Reclaim Chicago will lead an action this Monday to show the bond court judges that we are watching and that we will hold them accountable to successfully implementing this order.

The rally is Monday, September 18 from noon until 3 p.m. at the Cook County Circuit Court (26th and California). RSVP on Facebook.

Action 2: Tell Your MoCs - No War with North Korea

The Trump administration is still beating the drums for war with North Korea. Building upon the President’s dangerous tweets and promises of “fire and fury,” Defense Secretary Mattis has warned of a “massive military response,” and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley declared that North Korea is “begging for war.”

The stakes are high—and scary. North Korea has now tested its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb and is continuing to shoot missiles over Japan. The rogue nation claims to be making rapid progress towards its ability to strike the United States. But we can’t let fear lead us into catastrophic war. Given the extremely volatile nature of the situation, we need measured leadership that leverages every diplomatic tool to de-escalate tensions—not reckless tweets that fuel the flames.

Our Members of Congress have a crucial role to play in pulling us back from the brink of war. Call them today to urge them to avoid war.

Script: My name is _____. I live in zip code ______, and am a member of Indivisible Chicago. I'm calling on the [MoC name] to denounce Trump’s dangerous rhetoric that puts our national security at risk and demand that Trump come to Congress first before engaging in any sort of military operation against North Korea. Trump’s dangerous rhetoric could provoke the unstable Kim Jong Un and further escalate tensions when our top priority should be de-escalation and diplomacy.

Action 3: ERA Illinois - Adopt a Legislator Day for Constitution Day on September 17

Illinois hasn't ratified the Equal Rights Amendment.  Let's fix that now! Send a copy of the book "Equal Means Equal" by Jessica Neuwirth (New Press) to every member of the Illinois state legislature in honor of Constitution Day (September 17).  Let's educate our legislators on the importance of passing #SJRCA4 to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

Adopt a legislator for $19.72 to cover the cost of the book and shipping. If your legislator has already received a copy, please share this campaign with your Illinois friends on social media.
