Action 1: VOTE TODAY - Call on House Reps to Prevent the Deportation of Undocumented Immigrants

Today in the House, Trump’s supporters will attempt to ram through H.R.3697, the so-called "Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act." This bill amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to give the Department of Homeland Security sweeping authority to designate who is (or was) in a gang, and to deport them without challenge. For example, undocumented immigrants who commit "immigration offenses" -- including harboring another undocumented immigrant -- would be considered gang members. The Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security would have the authority to label even non-violent and petty offenders as gang members, with no statute of limitations on their alleged crimes.

To compound matters, anyone seeking to challenge the “gang” label must appeal their case not to a neutral court, but to the same Secretary of Homeland Security who labeled them in the first place (or seek “an act of Congress”). In effect, there is no real way to challenge an arbitrary decision by a federal agency bent on deporting as many undocumented immigrants as possible, including DACA recipients. This bill creates a legal authority to launch a wave of deportations that cannot be challenged. Demand that your MOC votes NO on this bill.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent and member of Indivisible Chicago.  I'm calling to express my strong opposition to H.R.3697, the so-called "Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act," which would label many non-violent undocumented immigrants as gang members and give the Department of Homeland Security the power to deport them without challenge. Rep. [name] must vote NO on this undemocratic and immoral bill. Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.

Action 2: TOMORROW - DACA Know Your Rights

Trump’s order rescinding DACA is the height of cruelty. He has now put 800,000 young people at the mercy of a Congress who has shown time and time again that they cannot pass legislation. To give guidance to DACA recipients and to educate the community, Indivisible Pilsen, Rise and Organize, and Indivisible Chicago/Illinois have organized the DACA Know Your Rights Event.

DACA recipients are invited to learn about their rights, get moral support from a community of peers, and form coalitions that will make the #HereToStay movement stronger. A panel of experts from ICIRR, ACLU, and more will share resources and address what comes next. DACA supporters are invited to find out the misconceptions and truths about DACA.

DACA Know Your Rights will be held on Wednesday, September 13 from 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. at Catalyst Ranch (656 West Randolph Street #3W). RSVP here

A special thanks to Catalyst Ranch for hosting!

Action 3: Call on Senators to Stop Trumpcare 3.0

The Senate’s new Graham-Cassidy is strikingly similar to earlier TrumpCare bills. While we have not seen final details, we know it still destroys Medicaid as we know it by fundamentally and permanently transforming the program into a per-capita cap.

The bill also still undermines protections for people with pre-existing conditions and people who need treatment for opioid abuse by allowing states to waive essential health benefits. Learn more about this harmful bill.

We must keep the pressure on our Senators to vote “no” on this dangerous bill.

Call Senator Duckworth | DC:  202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506
Call Senator Durbin | DC:  202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952"

Script: Hi, my name is ______ and my zip code is _____. I'm a member of Indivisible Chicago. I'm calling to ask the Senator to oppose the Graham-Cassidy Act, which is essentially TrumpCare 3.0. It still destroys Medicaid as we know it by fundamentally and permanently transforming the program into a per-capita cap. The bill also still undermines protections for people with pre-existing conditions and people who need treatment for opioid abuse by allowing states to waive essential health benefits.
