Tools You Can Use

Action #1: Demand the Removal of Bannon, Gorka, and Miller from the White House

The tragic events in Charlottesville on Saturday, August 12th rocked the United States to the core. In times of hatred-fueled turmoil, Americans should be able to depend on the President to reaffirm American values. Instead, the President continues to blame “both sides” and minimize white nationalist violence.

This massive failure of leadership should not come as a surprise to anyone, as Donald Trump has at least three White House advisers who support white supremacist ideologies: Steven Bannon, Sebastian Gorka and Steven Miller. Each man has a history of either promoting their own racist views or amplifying the views of other extremists. It is now time for Congress to call for their resignation so we can begin to heal from the damage that has been done.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME]. I’m a constituent in [zip code] and a member of Indivisible Chicago. In light of the tragedy in Charlottesville on Saturday, I'm calling to demand that [Senator/Rep’s name] call for the resignation of Steve Bannon, Sebastian Gorka and Stephen Miller. These three men have histories of extremist ideologies and should not be working in the White House. The American people deserve a Presidential administration that has no ties to racism, the KKK, white supremacy or Nazis. Thank you for your time and attention.

Action #2: Stop the Expansion of Sinclair Broadcasting

Sinclair Broadcasting, a right-wing-leaning media company, has been working to acquire Tribune Media in order to expand its reach. Already the nation's largest TV broadcast company, Sinclair's potential merger would extend its reach to a colossal 72% of U.S. households.

Though Congress imposed an audience cap of 39% on media companies, the FCC is reviving a technologically obsolete loophole called the "UHF discount" to help Sinclair proceed with its expansion. This is troubling due to the company's practice of forcing local news stations to air segments, often hosted by former Trump aide Boris Epshteyn, that are filled with extreme right-wing propaganda. This practice not only injects inaccurate and partisan rhetoric into the news media at a dangerously effective level, it also imposes excessive control over local news stations.

The timing of the Sinclair-Tribune merger has also raised questions of quid pro quo. During the election, Sinclair-owned stations aired a disproportionate amount of positive coverage for Trump. Now, the Trump administration's FCC Chairman is delivering regulatory roll backs to help Sinclair grow its enterprise. Call the FCC to make your voice heard.

Call Ajit Pai, FCC Chairman at 202-418-1000

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from Chicago. I’m calling in opposition to the merger of Sinclair Broadcasting and Tribune Media. The merger will expand Sinclair's reach beyond its legal audience cap of 39% to a massive 72% of US households. The FCC should not bend rules or roll back regulations in order to grow Sinclair’s pro-Trump, right wing messaging. Thank you so much for your time.

Action #3: Email the Illinois State Board of Elections (SBE) to End Discriminatory Purges from Voter Rolls

We have learned that the State Board of Elections has decided not to put the issue of Crosscheck on August meeting agenda, despite an outcry from the public and demands from our State and U.S. Representatives. This is incredibly disappointing. Crosscheck is a program designed to disenfranchise voters, predominantly the young, those with low-incomes, and people of color. The program is administered by Kris Kobach, who has documented ties to white supremacists groups and a record of advocating for legislation to suppress voter registration. We are asking our members to continue to send emails to the SBE to demand that this issue be taken up. If you already sent an email - thank you! - but please do so again!
