Tools you can use

ACTION #1 Call Senators Durbin about ACA repeal

(In the event of updates or corrections throughout the day, check the website for latest scripts)

Here's the thing. We have two great Senators, but we need them to step up and fight harder to save ACA. Below you will find multiple scripts to use depending on how comfortable you are in calling. They are listed in order of impact. If you reach a legislative aide, share a personal story about how ACA repeal would impact you or a loved one.

Script #1: Durbin - Calling specific legislative aide

Durbin DC number: 202-224-2152

Hi, my name is __________ and I'm a constituent of Senator Durbin. I'd like to speak to Jessica McNiece or Max Kanner in charge of Health Care.

(assuming you get to speak to them. Otherwise leave similar in a voicemail)

Hi, I'm a constituent of Senator Durbin. Could you please tell me what the Senator is doing to stop the Senate Republicans from passing a bill to repeal ACA in secret? I'm asking the Senator to do whatever he can to stop this bill from moving forward, including withholding consent and speaking out on the Senate floor. [insert personal story]

Script #1: Duckworth - Speaking to specific legislative aide

Duckworth DC number: 202-224-2854

Hi, my name is __________ and I'm a constituent of Senator Duckworth. I'd like to speak to Josie Villanueva in charge of Health Care.

(assuming you get to speak to them. Otherwise leave similar in a voicemail)

Hi, I'm a constituent of Senator Duckworth. Could you please tell me what the Senator is doing to stop the Senate Republicans from passing a bill to repeal ACA in secret? I'm asking the Senator to do whatever he can to stop this bill from moving forward, including withholding consent and speaking out on the Senate floor. [insert personal story]

Script #2 (removing the step of asking for a specific legislator):

Hi, my name is ___________ and I'm a constituent of Senator __________. I'm calling to ask what the Senator is doing to stop the Senate Republicans from passing a bill to repeal ACA in secret? I'm asking the Senator to do whatever he can to stop this bill from moving forward, including withholding consent and speaking out on the Senate floor.

Script #3: Less confrontational

Hi, my name is ________________ and I'm a constituent of Senator ___________. I'm calling to thank the Senator for speaking out against ACA repeal and to ask him/her to continue to fight and speak out against the Senate bill. I'd like to ask the Senator to speak out on the Senate floor against this bill.

ACTION#2 Send and email to the legislative aides in charge of Health Care (you can do this AND call)

Durbin: jessica_mcniece@durbin.senate.govmax_kanner@durbin.senate.gov

Duckworth: josie_villanueva@duckworth.senate.gov

Send an email asking the Senators to do something to stop the Senate Healthcare bill, including withholding consent to slow the Senate proceedings. If you are sending an email, make it personal. You or someone you know is impacted by ACA repeal, so make that known. Here are the ten worst things about Trumpcare to get you thinking.

Why Today's Action is Important

The only voice we have in the health care fight right now is the voice of our Senators. There have been a lot of words and snarky tweets about how bad it is that the Senate is ramming a bill through in secret, but words aren't going to protect the healthcare of millions of people. We need the Senate to take action.

Withholding consent is detailed here, but it basically is a Senate procedure that will slow down the Senate proceedings. The reason this is important is that there's a possibility of getting this bill delayed until the next recess when Republican senators will feel renewed heat at town halls. Also, as Ezra Levin says, 2 weeks in the sun will just allow this awful bill to fester.

We need our Senators to play hardball and they will only do this with pressure. There is just as much reason for us to call our democratic Senators right now as there is for people to call Republican senators. Senators Durbin and Duckworth need to fight harder and do something more.
