Friday, March 31st - Illinois should require 5 years tax returns; Join People's Filibuster

Victory on HB780, Illinois House bill to require 5 years tax returns

HB 780, the Illinois House bill requiring 5 years tax returns to get on the Illinois ballot for president, has passed subcommittee and is gaining steam! Indivisible Chicago was responsible for pushing over 1200 witness slips supporting this legislation against just a couple opposed. Due to all the hard work calling and lobbying from our group, the bill has moved out of committee and will move to a floor vote!

Let's make sure all of our state Representatives are voting for this bill. Check here and see if your state Representative is a co-sponsor of this bill. If not, give them a call and ask them to vote for this bill and join on as a co-sponsor. You can find your state Representative's number at this link.

Script: Hi, my name is ___________ and I'm a constituent of state Representative ___________. I'm calling to ask Representative ____________ to vote for HB780, the bill requiring 5 years tax returns to be on the Illinois ballot, and to sign on as a co-sponsor.

The Senator Bill requiring 5 years tax returns, SB982, is up for vote next week. It has 15 co-sponsors but it could have a lot more. Take a look at the list of co-sponsors. If your state Senator isn't on it, call them and ask them to join as a co-sponsor and vote for SB982. This is an easy decision. All we are asking for is transparency, and given the situation in Washington, there is no question this is the right thing to do.

Join the People's Filibuster Tomorrow

Last night we had another win in the fight for the remaining seat on the Supreme Court. Donald Trump, under investigation for colluding with a foreign power to undermine our elections, is trying to put a man on the Supreme Court who holds views just this side of Antonin Scalia. Neil Gorsuch is far too extreme a Supreme Court nominee to be a reasonable appointment while Donald Trump is under investigation.  And we've spent the last four days telling that to Senator Duckworth.

And she listened.

This is great news! She is joining the filibuster and will not vote to end debate on his nomination. Illinois's two Senators are on board and it's in no small part due to our calls. We have been hammering her phone lines for four straight days and she has listened to her constituents. Great job, everyone!

So today, finally, there is no action on the Supreme Court other than calling to thank our Senators for standing up for what is right and opposing this extreme nominee.

However, the fight continues around the country. There are 35 no votes and we need six more for a filibuster. Join the People's Filibuster, a protest across the country of this extreme nominee, and lend your voice in putting pressure on the remaining Senators who have not committed to blocking this nominee. The Democrats are willing to vote, this nominee just doesn't rate a yes vote. Maybe they should try Merrick Garland? Head over to Facebook and let us know you're interested.
