News

I’ve got three sentences I want you to read:

“The White House budget office has drafted a hit list of programs that President Trump could eliminate to trim domestic spending, including longstanding conservative targets like the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Legal Services Corporation, Americorps and the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities.” - Feb, 17 New York Times

“A White House budget official, who outlined the plan on a conference call with reporters, said the administration would propose "increasing defense by $54 billion or 10 percent.’”
[...]
“President Donald Trump is seeking what he called a "historic" increase in defense spending, but ran into immediate opposition from Republicans in Congress who must approve his plan and said it was not enough to meet the military's needs.” - Feb 27, Reuters

….NOT ENOUGH???

The budget has to be passed by both houses of congress. It can be stopped.

Testimony to Americorps’ value to the USA by me

I am an alumnus of Americorps. After college I moved to New York City to serve the students at a Bronx public high school as an Algebra teaching assistant. I spent 10 months working 60-hour weeks in one of the most underfunded schools in the country. My program, Blue Engine, sought to disrupt the normal classroom dynamic and lower the teacher to student ratio and increase the level of engagement and differentiation for every student. In New York state, students take high stake tests at the end of the year. The Algebra test is required for high school graduation, but every year the pass rate across New York City, especially in the Bronx, is abysmal. But not that year, not my classroom. My team made a measurable difference for our students. In fact, classrooms with Blue Engine Teaching Assistants have had significantly better outcomes in all 6 full school years of the program’s existence. Here’s a clip of President Obama acclaiming our success.

That (more than) full-time position paid me just more than $14,000 in the 11 months of the job. At the end of my service, I received about $6,000 in student loan forgiveness and scholarships. I was able to cut my student loan debt in half and I didn’t have to pay a dime while I served. Americorps was an incredible opportunity for me, it changed my life, it offered me a job out of college, when I wanted to explore education, but didn’t feel comfortable committing to graduate school. Most importantly, Americorps made a difference for the students I served who are now on track to graduate, when most of them certainly wouldn’t be if not for the hard work of my team and nearly 100 other passionate young people from around the country.

Americorps' Impact

Hundreds of thousands of young Americans and Senior Citizens are making a difference in communities across the United States every day thanks to Americorps Programs like City Year, the National Civilian Community Corps, the Peace Corps Fellows Program, and hundreds of others in fields like education, environment, health, human need, public safety, and others. In fact, according to a report published by the Congressional Budget Office in December 2016, “in 2015, roughly 75,000 people participated in AmeriCorps and 270,000 people in the Senior Corps.” These are jobs that provide experience right out of college or a way to give back in old age, they allow people like me to travel the country, they allowed me to defer and knock out a large part of my student loans. Without Americorps, I don't know what I would be doing today.
