Action 1: Phone Bank Against Trump’s Tax Bill

Doug Jones’ victory changes the game on the tax scam. Republicans will try to rush the tax bill through before Jones is seated and do whatever they can to stall seating him. Mitch McConnell is doing everything he can to ram this thing through and, with a new Democratic Senator headed to DC soon, he’s feeling the heat.

The conference committee will unveil their conference report on Friday. The Senate could vote as early as Monday, with the House close behind them.

In addition to Jones’ victory last night, we have a lot of leverage in this fight. Republican Senators Susan Collins (ME), Jeff Flake (AZ), and Marco Rubio (FL) voted for the tax scam, but both have also said the bill wasn’t perfect. There are also a number of differences between the two bills and the Republican caucus isn’t aligned yet. They’re running out of time to get everything done, and we can stop them.

Amp up the pressure on these targets from our blue state! You can phone bank from home as much as you want every day from 9 am to 9 pm local time until the tax scam fight is over.

Action 2: Thank Senators for Calling for Doug Jones to Be Seated

No vote on taxes should happen without Doug Jones.

The Senate’s filibuster-proof majority now hangs by one vote, following the election of Doug Jones in Alabama. The GOP is pushing a massive piece of legislation that is all done but the final voting. Congress should recognize the will of the people and wait for the new senator to be seated before taking such a momentous vote.

In 2010 under remarkably similar circumstances, Harry Reid put off voting on the health care bill until after newly elected Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown was seated.

Senators should follow the example of 2010 and do the thing their oath to the constitution would demand, which would be to wait to pass this tax bill until Doug Jones is seated.

Senator Durbin and Senator Duckworth have both tweeted their support for this. Call and thank them and let them know to keep fighting!

Call Senator Duckworth | DC:  202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506
Call Senator Durbin | DC:  202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952

Action 3: Call on Chicago to Remove Immigrant Father from Gang Database, Review its Content

On May 1st, 2017 Wilmer Catalan Ramirez filed a lawsuit for the excessive use of force that ICE used when they raided his home, and the Chicago Police Department and the City of Chicago for wrongfully putting him in the gang database.

Chicago’s mayor and city council should be advocates for every city resident who falls victim to Trump’s deportation force, but especially for those whose physical well-being is in danger and those who the city has had a specific role in leading to his wrongful detention.

Wilmer's detention was part of a national immigration raid targeting suspected gang members. It is clear that ICE wouldn’t have targeted Wilmer if it wasn’t for the Chicago police department.

The police created the gang database at Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s request in 2012 as part of his efforts to be ‘tough on crime.’ But since then, it has proven to be like other lists of names compiled by police in other parts of the country: arbitrary, discriminatory, and with dire consequences for those whose names get entered.

Wilmer didn’t find out he was on the list until ICE agents cited it as the reason they broke down his door. He never had a chance to look at the evidence and defend himself.

Last week, the City of Chicago admitted error in putting Wilmer in the Gang Database, but that has not changed the mind of the immigration agents who keep him detained.

Join us in asking Mayor Emanuel and the city council to correct this error and advocate for Wilmer’s release, and start to review the procedures and content of the Chicago gang database. Sign the petition.
