Wednesday, November 1 - Reauthorize CHIP / Register to Help Get Out the Vote for Virginia Election / Stop Sinclair-Tribune Merger

Actions You Can Take Today

  • Action 1:  Tell Congress to Reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

  • Action 2: Register to Help Get Out the Vote for Virginia Election

  • Action 3: DEADLINE TOMORROW - Submit a Public Comment to the FCC to Stop the Sinclair-Tribune Merger

Tools You Can Use

Action 1: Tell Congress to Reauthorize CHIP Immediately

The Children’s Health Insurance Program ensures nearly 9 million children have health insurance. CHIP is a federal-state partnership where the federal government provides most—or in some cases, all—of the funding necessary to cover uninsured children. Federal funding was increased as part of the Affordable Care Act.

No one thought Congress would let CHIP funding expire on September 30, but that’s exactly what they did. Republicans invested so much time and energy in making one last push to pass TrumpCare, that they couldn’t find time to reauthorize a program giving 9 million kids health insurance. Let that sink in.

If Congress doesn’t act soon, states will start running out of money. Some states have already stopped taking new applications for CHIP. Call your members of Congress and demand that they reauthorize this vital program immediately to ensure no child loses their healthcare.

Script: Hello! My name is [name] and I’m calling from [zip code]. I’m calling to ask that the [MoC] support reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program immediately. Our state may run out of funding soon, so it’s really important that Congress do this immediately. I appreciate [MoC]’s support.

Action 2: Phone Bank at Home to Get Out the Vote for Virginia Election

For too long, Democrats have been ignoring state politics and have allowed Republicans to take over both state legislatures and the Governor's offices. Out of 50 states, 34 of them have Republican governors. We have to turn the tide, starting with the 2017 Virginia Governor's race.

Virginians go to the polls next Tuesday in the first state-wide elections since Trump was elected. This is the first real test of our movement’s ability to turn the resistance into electoral power and we. can. WIN. Our organizing team teamed up with Democracy for America and to build a tool (similar to our blue state calling tool from the healthcare fight!) where you can call or text voters in Virginia from the comfort of your own home to encourage them to vote. Sign up now to volunteer before election day!

Action 3: DEADLINE TOMORROW - Submit a Public Comment to the FCC to Stop the Sinclair-Tribune Merger

Sinclair Broadcasting, a right-wing-leaning media company, has been working to acquire Tribune Media in order to expand its reach. Already the nation's largest TV broadcast company, Sinclair's potential merger would extend its reach to a colossal 72% of U.S. households.

The FCC is pausing its review of Sinclair Broadcast Group’s proposed merger with Tribune Media to allow more time for the filing of public comments until TOMORROW: Thursday, November 2. The FCC is more than halfway through its 180-day review timeline for the merger, which would create a broadcasting giant with 223 TV stations serving 108 markets, including 39 of the top 50.

To leave a comment, you’ll have to go to this site, click “+ Express,” and then fill out the form it opens up to. Make sure you leave the proceeding number “17-179” in place, as that’s what ties it to the Sinclair proposal. Also, be aware that everything filed is public, so others will be able to see your name and address.

Suggested comments (please edit to make these your own): I strongly oppose the merger of Sinclair Broadcasting and Tribune Media. The merger will expand Sinclair's reach beyond its legal audience cap of 39% to a massive 72% of US households. The FCC should not bend rules or roll back regulations to allow Sinclair to dominate the US airwaves.
