Tools You Can Use

Action 1: TODAY! Reject the NRA Rally and Vigil for Las Vegas

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Indivisible Chicago, and Women's March are partnering TODAY to take a stand against the NRA and to demand that Congress address gun reform in our country.

The horrific shooting in Las Vegas forces us as a nation to decide: will we accept the status quo and allow mass shootings and gun homicides to be the backdrop to our daily lives? Or do we want to live in a country where we can go to the movies or a concert or school or work or church and be safe from gun violence?

We choose to honor the victims and survivors in Las Vegas by demanding that Congress reject the NRA leadership's radical and dangerous agenda for more guns for more people in more places, with no restrictions.

Join us on Monday, October 9 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Federal Plaza for a rally and to hear speakers including Representatives Mike Quigley (IL-5), Luis Gutierrez (IL-4), and Jan Schakowsky (IL-9); and Gubernatorial candidates Daniel Biss (D) and Ameya Pawar (D). RSVP here

Action 2: Tell Senators - No Cuts to Medicaid/Medicare to Fund Trump’s Tax Cuts

On Thursday, the House of Representatives voted 219 to 206 in favor of the Republican House budget resolution that proposed $5.8 trillion in cuts over the next decade to Medicare, Medicaid, education, infrastructure and other critical services while paving the way for trillions of dollars in tax cuts that would mostly benefit the wealthy and corporations.

TrumpCare would have destroyed Medicaid as we know it. But even after the failure of TrumpCare, Republicans have said they won’t stop coming for Medicaid. They have to pay for their massive tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations, and their budget blueprint does that by cutting Medicaid by roughly $1 trillion over 10 years—that’s about 20% of Medicaid’s total funding—together with other important domestic programs.

Republicans again want to use the special process in the Senate, called “reconciliation,” to jam their Trump Tax Scam through with only 51 votes (so, no Democrats). That means they have to pass a budget resolution (which has already passed out of the House Budget Committee) to unlock the reconciliation process. That’s why we must hold every member accountable early and often.

Momentum is building fast, and we need our Senators to act NOW. Call them today!

Senator Duckworth | DC:  202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506
Senator Durbin | DC:  202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952
Follow this script to urge them to fight cuts to Medicare and Medicaid as part of Trump’s tax bill.

Action 3: Donate to Fund Paul Ryan's Challenger

As the Republican speaker of the House, Paul Ryan refuses to hold President Trump accountable and has been a cheerleader for the Trump agenda, doing everything he can to take away our health care. As a result, he’s facing the toughest re-election challenge of his career.

That's why we're not waiting around for the general election. Paul Ryan is sure to have big-moneyed interests coming to his rescue. Swing Left is pooling resources now to help make sure we defeat Paul Ryan and win back the House in 2018.

This isn’t like the other Swing Districts on the map. Paul Ryan has won his seat fairly comfortably in recent elections, and redistricting has tried to make it a safe seat for the House Speaker.

But wave elections often take a toll on the leaders of the party in charge. When the 1994 midterms swept a Republican majority into Congress, House Speaker Tom Foley lost his seat.

It’s not going to be easy. He’s got $11 million in the bank. That’s why Swing Left’s District Fund is so important—we need to give Ryan’s eventual Democratic challenger the ability to compete.

By putting time, money, and attention into Paul Ryan’s district, we can force him to play defense, making him spend more time campaigning in his home district than in Washington helping Trump’s priorities sail through the House or fundraising for Republicans in other Swing Districts.

Donate now to help fund Paul Ryan's challenger!
